I'd take either a CCV-100 or a CCM-100 frankly... and as soon as they start shipping I predict people will sell them regardless of how great I think they are. This is when I shall pounce and claim my prize!!!

Of course you and I will be in a steel cage death match over any plexi style jose mod that comes up in the meantime... Prepare to meet your maker!!!

:hys:

Steve

:hys: Bring it on!!!!

I think the CCV OR CCM would be perfect for me, i honestly still cant decide which i want for sure.. which is why i have not put in an order yet.

Il be honest, if there were some clearer clips showing the true differences of both models.. id be able to decide a LOT easier. But the NAMM vid clips pretty much have similar sounds dialled in on both amps, so its making it difficult to work out which would suit me better...

Steve, did you ever considering trying to hunt down an actual Jose Arredondo modded Marshall? I know you used to own one.

There was a little shop down in Huntington Beach, CA that had a bunch of them at one point, however at the time I wasn't buying amps. His mods were all over the map as some will tell you as well. Some sounded great, others... not so much. At this point, I have looked around in pawn shops and such to no avail. Anyone who has a good one is keeping it near as I can tell... I do search around once in awhile...

Since Mark is actually alive and kicking, his amps seem much more accessible though... and consistent. Plus - you get the black goop, which is not a feature my old pal Jose offered...

CycleOps! Nice man! I actually have a CycleOps power meter installed in the hub of my training wheelset. It is really nice to know heart rate, power output and speed when training. Also nice to be able to download your workouts to the computer and compare week over week training process, etc... Go get on that damn thing!!!

Yeah exactly.. Goop = Tone :D

Was that the shop that Mark Cameron once worked in (Jose's old shop), when they had all the Jose modded Marshalls?

I have heard clips of a few Jose's, and i heard a couple live too... (John Sykes's Jose modded Marshall).. Like you said, im betting that all the good ones were bought up and never sold again. Someone told me that Joe Holmes was offered thousands of $$$ for his Jose modded Marshalls, and he will never let them go no matter what, because they sound so good.

I wish i lived in CA so i could actually take my amp to Mark's place and work on a mod that NAILED the sound im after. I mean, if you live close then the amp can be modded again and again until its perfect, cause you can just take it back to Mark... but being the other side of the pond, that cant happen for me!

No, Jose's old shop was 70 miles up the road north in "The Valley" - Arrco Electronics...

I've got the Fluid 2, and I've now got a Garmin set up on my Madone 5.0, so I can do speed and heart rate, but not power. I usually just judge that by the pool of sweat on the floor!

Oh cool!

Did you buy your Jose modded Marshall already modded from someone else? or did you take your amp to Jose originally and have him mod it?

I searched a lot of places for info about Jose and his mods, but man theres hardly any info out on the web about his work other than the usual EVH story.

I had two Jose-modded Marshalls in the 80s. One was a plexi style, the other a JCM 800. Both were amps I brought to his shop to have him mod them. He would add a preamp gain stage (and associated preamp tube), he also added a master with a push/pull that cut out two of the tubes in the 100 watters I had out of the circuit. There are more changes, but I don't remember them all...

He was a character - real old when I met him and VERY unhealthy looking... He was full of stories about being back stage with Van Halen, etc. and the shop had lots of pictures of him and the band backstage. His shop always had lots of players amps - one of Jake E. Lee's over here... couple of RATTs amps over there... Lizzy Borden logos stenciled on a couple in the corner... you get the idea...

steve, what's your take...did jose mod ed's amps or not? the new thing is to say ed's marshall was never modded but there's pics of it from the back that shows a weird switch.
i think it was modded.

There is no question in my mind that some of Ed's amps he used live in the 80s had full Jose mods with added gain stages. I know he had full Jose mods for a fact because there were several amps in the shop at different times I was there that had legit VH logos stenciled on them and were clearly Eds. Whether he used them on record, I have no idea, but he certainly had some with added gain stages I can verify... and I believe he was using them live...

As far as the "magic" marshall he recorded with - I have no idea, but it certainly seems from pics I've seen that at the very least, at one point, he had a Jose master volume on the rear panel... Other mods, I just don't know, but I doubt it had a full jose mod with added gain stages...

Mark never worked for Jose. He worked at a shop that bought all the Marshall stock from Jose after Jose died. There were probably 15-20 old Marshalls that Mark got look at when he worked at that shop. Some were already modded, some were back in to Jose for repairs and some were still stock. I've told the story of the Atomica amp many times from that batch of amps.

I think that Ed's old Marshall was modded. That thing on the back of Eddie's amp back in the day was a pot without a knob on it. I was just talking to a guy yesterday that has been a big part of the LA scene since the mid 70's. He literally knew everyone, Jake, Warren, Lynch, Terry Kilgore, Tracy G, etc etc. He was always taking his amp into Jose and said there is absolutely no question that Eddie's main Marshall was modded. He said the pot on the back was the Presence knob because the spot for the Presence on the front of the amp was the Master Volume. He said he has a '65 JTM45 with the exact same mod as was in Eddie's amp and that it is just the most killer amp ever. Apparently Warren DeMartini borrowed it for a recording session and ended up "babysitting" the amp for almost 15 years and that he just got it back from Warren. I'm not going to name names, but this guy was in bands, wrote for one of the major LA rock newspapers and managed several bands from LA that got signed or really close. Very cool, very nice guy.

You know how some of you guys love these back in the day stories? Try owning a guitar shop in So Cal. I have plenty of my own stories but get tons from other guys.
