Can we be done with the fake marshall stacks on stage thing?

This kind of thing is only on guitarist's radar, which makes up like 2% of the audience today.

Exactly.

I have to agree with the others, fake or not, I dig the mojo.

Then there is Matt Pike. three or more oranges, ALL hooked up and loud AF!

I remember when Darrell got his first fake Randall cabs. The "speakers" were painted onto the wood, and they folded up in a kinda cool way. By the time of the end of Pantera he had that huge wall of cabs and the stack of warheads at the far right hand side(none of the heads were on or being used).

But the best was when he was on his last tour and had Krank cabs and heads onstage, and his old rack full of old Randall heads backstage powering the cabs. Often the Prank Krank heads were not even "on" or had cords plugged into the front.

Now days you can buy used 4x12s cheap. Its not expensive at all to have the awesome looking wall. But nobody wants to move it every time they gig. Hell, there are guys that keep their Kemper profiles on a thumb drive and just carry a guitar or two.

i click on a lot of blabbermouth.net links to older bands performing live just to see how they're holding up. Its mostly older bands that still do this, or festivals. I was watching queensryche on some cruise, and there were all these stacks on stage and none of them were on, and it just triggered that thought. who out there still goes "DUDE LOOK AT ALL THOSE MARSHALL STACKS!!! COOOOL, ITS GUNNA BE SOOOOO LOUD!" ?
I just saw QR recently, and it made me giggle. They each have a Marshall full-stack on stage that they obviously don't use, in fact I'm not even sure they were on! Literally not even trying to put up a facade.

I personally don't really care, I wouldn't do it but if bands want to they can. If I'm gonna have cabs on stage, the ideal scenario is the way Exodus does it; 4 4x12s, all of which I'm reasonably certain are actually on. The air being pushed! Nothing else liked it.

Keep in mind the original idea behind those walls of stacks.

1.) They HAD to push air back in the old days because either there was no PA or the house PA/speakers just were not going to do the music justice (ie rock and metal).

2.) You needed a back drop to hide all the crap and roadies working behind the stage. Not real attractive.

It's dated and takes up space. The trend these days is to keep that stuff out of sight and create a slick and modern environment using other things.

Whenever I see Judas Priest or Maiden or any of the 70’s/80’s Hard Rock/Heavy Metal bands live I want to see the stacks (real or not) onstage. It’s all part of an awesome look during an awesome era of music.
Many of our musical dreams were stagefuls of stacks screaming with the air of the notes holding us upright

I think Lamb Of God had some false cabs for a while. :
They definitely did.

I like Rush's approach. I think it would be much better to fake an amazing tone with a pignose or something silly or a kitchen appliance like Rush. That is actually hilarious, never knew they did that.

The best part of the Rush backline was that they'd mic the appliances.

Are we cool with real Marshalls on stage?

gotta love Yngwie

I've seen Slash and the conspirators this summer on a festival, they had a full backline set up with 3 full stacks and 2 bass 8x10s, GK as far as I remember.
The main PA went down, and the stage was dead silent only the snare was audible, they did not even notice it, because they are all on in-ears.

So that is Yngwies?

Don’t know to rather laugh
Or

Looks like a helluva lot of work regardless.

AFAIK Yngwie moved the drums to the side, because it took too much focus instead of him.
Yngwie is a bad version of Steel Panther without the songs and the jokes. :DDDD

I think that the stacks are the only thing bigger than his ego...

I just had this conversation with my 17 year old, we attended Exit 111 Festival for the whole weekend and I remarked to him that it was a bummer to see all these awesome bands and none of their gear on stage. We’re both guitar players and to him it seemed normal as all the shows he’s attended have been like that, but then when Zakk came out he got it and agreed it’s cooler with stacks. That’s the whole mythos of rock and metal, to be larger than life. It IMO DOES absolutely add to the show.

We’re both gear nerds, IDGAF if you’re just playing through a mic’d Princeton, I wanna see what’s making that great sound.

I like it.. seeing Steve Stevens or Slash without some cabs and amps behind them just looks so bare. Fills out the stage a bit too.

Sorry. Yngwie's set up is just embarrassing. I like the 'big rock' look myself but that is just foolish. I remember when I first saw that pic all I could think of was the:

the time it takes to set up
the weight of those amps
the value of those amps
the transportation of those amps
and the power those amps draw

Just so pointless :dunno:

To be fair I think only 6 of those amps are real and there as backups, blending or look. I think the rest on the left and those not in use are dummy cabs and heads.

when I saw Mastodon and Primus last year Bill only had a Friedman cab on stage and Brent had like an Orange cab. I didnt even care what Pimus was using but I saw an interview that they had a bunch of Brent Hinds Terrors that werent connected to anything. I saw Ozzy on the No More Tours tour(I think that was one of his first farewell tours) Zakk had a tone of speaker cabs on stage but after the second or third song they changed pictures to show they were actually TV's
