Neal Schon could 'out play' a lot of these guys (Carlos for sure) but he was busy getting laid and making money. And I kind of hate Journey so it's not like I'm a fanboy. Guys like Tommy Vetterli don't even make the discussion but I think are every bit as good as some of the guys mentioned (and would 'wipe floors' with Carlos imo).
Which era of Journey are you referring to? 70's progressive or 80's cheese? Neal made is mark long before the Steve Perry 'cheese' era, and long before the 80's MTV circus acts.
I think you just hate 80s metal. If you think both Lynch and Akira suck but think Cavazo is underrated you’re in a minority for sure.
I don't think Lynch and Akira suck... I was just kidding with the other guy. I loved listening to 80's rock when I was drinking at the bars, not so much sober. Lots of really bad singers in the 80's. Don Dokken, Vince Neal, Bret Michaels, Stephen Pearcy, Axl Rose... just bad. The singer of Kindom Come was quite good, IMO. RJD was the king!

If there is anyone to blame for the circus show that was the 1980's, it is surely David Lee Roth. I think the popularity of VH had a deleterious effect on rock music overall. Instead of players trying to develope their own style and sound, many were trying to be EVH. Why the fuck would anyone want to sound exactly like someone else? I never understood that? Anyway, there are a few 80's acts that I listen to occasionally. I also liked some of the 'new wave' music that era. Weird stuff! Unique.

I was 19 years old when 1980 hit, and was already playing for 3 years. My influences were somewhat of a different breed.

You just can't resist trolling, can you? Putting a cat with its balls in a vice like Axl Rose and a tone deaf moron like Vince Neil in the same league as Don Dokken? Granted, Don sucks now, but in the 80s, he was pretty awesome.

And plenty of guys sounded like, guess what, themselves. What an idea.

To elaborate: I think a player should attempt to sound like every guitarist they are inspired by. However, you should fail each and every time. In doing so, you learn something from that player (by attempting to copy them), and inevitably end up sounding like yourself (by failing). That said, too many YouTube guitarists with 1.5 influences sound like they spent all day trying to mimic every tick and eccentricity of a song just so some 50+ year old dude can tell them, "Wow, that's just like on the record!" Imagine being beholden to play Eruption exactly like on the record when you didn't write it and the person who did likely has never played it note for note live once.

Don Dokken and Axel Rose are shitty singers but Kevin DuBrow is ok ??? DLR sucks ? Dude... idk if anyone thinks Dave is a great singer, but most think he’s the best frontman ever, and they’re right !

Agreed Pauly; as a frontman he'd be hard-to-beat. Can't think of anyone who'd compete with him off the top of my head.

I'd love to have an ESP like this. Is this an ESP?

I love Akira's playing, but wasn't he a little out of time here? That wasn't exactly "locked in" with the drums... :D

It's not from the "glory days" either, compare that to anything Lynch has done in the last 25 years lol.

Trolling is not defined as something you disagree with.

That's what I loathed about 80's players, and part of the downside of the rise of EVH. Too many tricks and eccentricities... 'Technique hell'! I was happy when it ended.

Who said Kevin DuBrow was a great singer? Who said DLR sucks? The "Eat 'Em And Smile" tour was excellent, but, I also felt that Dave's goofy stage antics (and ass-less chaps) detracted from the musicianship of the band.

Best frontman ever? I'd have a hard time choosing between Jim Dandy, Steve Tyler, and DLR.

I saw a live QR show long ago; the only thing that stuck out was how sharp DuBrow was on almost EVERY song. Terrible.

Listen... None of the post-VH Sunset Strip bands had any business getting a record deal. It was pure greed on the part of the record companies. Glorified bar acts, nothing more.

Sure man, that makes sense. I mean, none of those bands sold lots of records or anything.

Dude you are comedy gold.

Not really disagreeing but the first line reminded me of something Tom Bukovac said about Allan Holdsworth: He plays like he's never seen anyone play guitar before.

...and a man dying of thirst will lick toilet water from a turd.

If I had to pick a favorite player from the 80's, I'd pick Criss Oliva. Not only was Criss a monster player, he was a totally humble guy. Very cool to talk with, like someone you've known all of your life. R.I.P.
