Its ok to swap out the preamp tubes while in standby, right? They do get a little toasty if you've been playing for a few minutes.

You'll get a reaction with the ccv if doing this while in standby but it's never really a good idea with any amp...hard on the tube too jerking it around while it's hot

Keep in mind that A/C heater voltage is still present with the amp on standby. Pulling a hot tube isn't the problem, other than the obvious. It is inserting a cold tube that can be the issue. Misalignment of the tube pins or partially inserted pins can lead to funny stuff or a handful of broken glass from the shock of voltage to the cold tube. But, I have done it many times. Not on the CCV though. I treat the top shelf stuff with a little more respect!

I have been trying out different tube combinations. I had seen posts about people just changing preamp tubes in standby mode, I have been turning the CCV fully off and let the tubes cool down a little while, a couple of minutes. Then swap in different tubes, and let the tubes warm up in standby mode for another minute or two.

This makes it more difficult to compare since the difference are much less than say changing speakers. I've actually started recording to have something to compare, rather than just going from memory.

Some Ei ECC83 I ordered just came in, but I noticed the labeling on the tubes say Ei 12Ax7. Should that be of any concern?

Funny...never even occurred to me to turn it off....shit, I'm pretty sure I don't even put them on standby...I know I've seen Mark do that, as well.

Not my words Steve. The words of Mr. Danny McKinney.
Danny- "Have you ever seen a perfect intricate spider web Gary? That is my approach to amplifier building"
Me- "Yes Dany, I know exactly what you are referring too."
Danny- " Have you ever seen the jagged sporadic looking webs?"
Me- "Yes"
Danny-" Well those are usually the webs woven by poisonous spiders"
Me- "Makes sense to me Danny"
Danny-" Well thats how Mark builds his amps" Like a poisonous spider web"
Me-" Well he builds his amps like he lives his life" I find it absolutly artististisc that he can build a reflection of himself". "Genius Savante"
