I’ve got a beater 1960A that I keep around just to mess with speakers. It’s had just about everything in it…..Celestions, Scumbacks, Fanes, Eminence.

I just x patterned a pair of EVH Celestions with V-Types and I’m impressed. The EVH have a dip in the mids compared to the reissue G12M and the V-Types fill that hole perfectly without overpowering like a Vintage 30.

They remind me of a V30 “Lite”. Plenty of mids, but narrower sounding with more clarity. Bass response isn’t the best, but I don’t like much low end in my tone. I honestly like the cab as much as my 1960AX with UK greenbacks now.

I like them too. I ended up with some V-Types when I couldn't find the Lynchbacks that I really wanted. They have qualities of both V30s and Greenbacks that I like, without being either of them.

One thing I don't like about them is that I don't think they sound as good as they get pushed closer to the edge of their power limit. I'm probably not going to dime a 100w NMV amp into a pair of them even if they're rated above that. A 2203 into a 4x12 though, and they still cut really well without being too spikey, and have a little bit of the GB high end.

I've heard that the A and V type together are really good. I actually have heard that from several people I know who I trust.

I like V-Types (more or less) and love EVH's, but don't 100% agree with your assesment. I don't think V-Types have any shortage of lows. I think they're bassier than average, even. I don't think EVH's have any shortage of low-end either, but I would asses the V-Types have an edge over them, even.

I also don't think EVH's are scooped. They're just not as upper-middy as comparable 16 ohm V-30's or as honky as comparable 8 ohm V-30's. But they've still got the typical Greenback "woody" mids.

Then again, Celestions vary from year to year, so your particular ones might be different from what I've tried.

:)

I like the V Types as well. I think they make a great “all rounder” in that they handle sparkly cleans really well but also take gain nicely. I have a V Type in my Cali Tweed combo

This is something I've been told also but never tried myself. Fluff has a good video from several years back.

Kyle Rhodes was one of the people I heard good stories from. Another guy was someone who spends way more on stuff than his skill level warrants but he knows good tone.
