charvel pickguard dilemma .....

alright so here is the deal ... I bought a new charvel pro mod ash bodied guitar. it played so damn good I couldn't resist, but this is the solid body model not a so cal. the thing is I cant get past the fact it doesn't have a pickguard. to me a strat style guitar needs a pickguard. I want to add one and then just drill the holes in the pickguard for controls myself, so it lines up with the factory holes I the body. I know it is my guitar and I can do what I please with it, but what is y'alls opinion on adding one ? some would say it is blasphemous and others are like hell yeah mod it !

I love both .... your guitar so add the pickguard if you want. A couple of problems you will run into are the length of the vol/tone pots shaft might be to short to go through a pickguard, same with the selector switch. You can buy longer shaft pots but I don't think you can get longer switches. If you are worried about resale value just use 3 screws with the new pickguard

I am actually planning to get rid of the blade switch if I go through with the pickguard install. I figured I may need a longer volume pot, but the plan is to go back to the older charvel control configuration with a 3 way toggle in place of the tone control.

Just buy one for a So Cal and you'll be fine. Good luck finding one though. Only place I've found having the right one is ordering through Fender parts dealers. The newer ones, (2016 and up), have the different knob placement and blade switch that aftermarkets have yet to match up. Plenty of blanks, though, if you're crafty enough to cut it up.

I thought the same thing with an RG 7620 I have. I ordered a p/g with no screw holes around the outside and instead of drilling I stuck the p/g on with 2 sided tape. You dont get the look of the screws but it still fulfilled what I was after.

Thats a very cool looking guitar . I would`t add a pickguard but instead pickup rings . I added pickup rings to my MIM Charvel hardtail last year so I could adjust the pickups and I prefer the look

Agree! I just picked up one of these myself, the beauty of the guitar is the all wood grain exposed..a pickguard would take away the vibe in my opinion..would probably also lower your resale value if you ever decide to sell it

I’m also thinking about this. I just found this and am really digging the white pickups and gold hardware.

As far as pickguards and Charvels go, I like them both with and without. Not much help, I know...

Pickguards always make a guitar look look cheaper,to me at least. I developed my guitar love during the 80's , so solid top, flashy colored super strats were the benchmark. Jackson/Charvel s with day glo colors and pointy bits at the end of a neck are my go to yardstick.

My esteemed opinion non-withstanding, Go with whatever inspires you to play it most.
