What's the build quality like on the newer Charvel Pro Mods? I'm eyeballing one for an 80s cover band that I'm considering doing. Love the look of the Specific Ocean model. I also like the fact that they have recessed floyds. Any thoughts? Thanks!

I have the Charvel Pro Mod So Cal in Ferrari Red MIJ. It's outstanding value for money. My only flaw would be the pickups that came with mine where a little lacking and too cutting in the high end (dimarzio tone zone and evolution). Went a bit mad and installed a sustainer into mine. The neck has an almost scalloped feel with a clear amount of car put into the fret work. The frets are nice and big. It's my workhorse guitar for sure

There is a big difference between the mim Charvels and a used USA or MIJ imo. I'd look for a used version of those two. I've tried 3 mim, they all feel cheap to me compared to the other two.

I have had a bunch of them... not a fan at all....after I got a custom shop charvel I would never buy another mim charvel... not even in the same league...

Let's be fair though, there's about a $2500 difference there. I would expect the Custom Shop to be A LOT better.

I've had most of the pro mods. Some CS Charvel's are better, but not all. I've played lots of CS charvels that weren't as good as the pro mods. I only had one pro mod that was a dead sounding guitar.

I've owned 3 USA models and about 6 MIJ models, I now have a MIM hard tail. Build quality is excellent and lives up to the Charvel name IMO. As far as I'm concerned, they are the best bang for your buck guitars. Will they match a CS Charvel, most likely not and to think they will is ridiculous. Most guitars in this price point come with generic pickups and generic parts. Mine came with a SD JB and single stack as well as quality locking tuners. The neck is straight and solid and the fretwork is excellent.

h I have played other charvel custom shop that did not impress me at all... something about the music zoo custom shop nitro fiddles.... this charvel does not compare to any other custom shop charvel that I have ever played....if you have the extra cash go for it....this one here is the most bad ass guitar I ever played....

I got a Specific Ocean San Dimas recently that has become my main gigging axe. Other than it being a little heavy (close to 9lbs), it's pretty much perfect. The neck fits me to a T. I can fly around on that guitar, and the most surprising thing was how good and usable the split coil tones were. I previously owned a MIM hardtail that wasn't as impressive, not terrible but the neck wasn't as nicely finished. This new one is as good as any of the previous US or Japan versions I've played, and I'm being serious. I own plenty of higher end guitars, but they did a great job on this.

Yeah, I remember the thread you posted, cool guitar. Still the fact remains. It's like me saying "Well, I have a Custom Shop Strat that blows away any MIM strat I have played." Most people would see the reasoning in that...even though in my case..it's not totally true..

I have 2016 MIM San Dimas. Plays and sounds fantastic. No issues at all....

I got a Neon Pink San Dimas needed a set up and some 3M 2000 grit sand paper on the neck... It's great holds its own against any of the many BC Rich 80's axes I've owned!

The new SD MIM necks are pretty much Wolfgang necks - sporting the two piece maple/board with graphite reinforcement rods and the wheel truss rod adjuster. Pretty cool.

I just hate the recessed Floyds and blade switches.
