I don't sell gear....unless there is some drastic reason. Like when I needed to raise capitol for a down payment on a house kinda deal.

yeah, that's like me. or unless it's something i absolutely hate.

I have said this time and time again. People need to seperate tone from technique. (not aimed at you Bruthah!!)

I agree, i separate it into "finger tone" (vibrato etc.) and "gear tone" (hot-rodded marshall tone, fendery, etc.).

though i have no idea which of those "how gear reacts to your playing" fits into, lol.

tone is in the colon...er...feet...er...brain...er...

dude, who gives a fuk. tone is tone, totally subjective. there is no grail. there is no best. there just is. we all got different ears so it really doesn't make any sense to debate sumthing we're all hearing.

This isn't a debate...I'm telling it like it is, you just have to listen.

No, you go find your own, CANADIAN!!! If I feel like chasing my tail for the rest of my life trying to get EVH's sound, that's MY business!!!

The irony is EVH in the early days was probably so busy chasing tail that he didn't worry all that much about what his rig sounded like.

I'm sure most of those old players with great tones just plugged in with some of the nice gear available at the time and just played....seems people are much more picky about this and that with their tone these days (Eric Johnson worries about what batteries he uses in his pedals) back then they didn't worry about batteries and what cables they used...just friggin play!!!

That reminds me. Awhile back, when I had my GH100L, I did some back to back clips. One was of my Mark III and the other was of my GH100L. I was able to get both to sound almost the same (the GH100L was being boosted where as the III was straight in.). Random Hero can attest to this as I showed him the clips. Unfortunately, I no longer have them on my computer. I told this to Mega recently and he claimed there was no way they sounded the same in the room. To me, the difference was the exactly like Ed said...in the feel.

I can get most amps to sound the way I want them to, but it's the feel and how they respond that turns me on/off an amp. When I play through someone else's rig, I sound just like me. I don't sound like the other guitarist at all. To me, that's proof most of the tone comes from how the individual dials in an amp and the individual's own playing style more-so than the actual tone of the amplifier.

Oh, and regarding Ed's clip. I can't really tell a difference between the two, but that is some very tasty playing!

If finding a common tone is the goal, many amps can be coerced into finding some common ground, however, what's the point of that? The amps are still very different and being able to find a common tone or two doesn't mean that one could replace the other or replicate the array of tones the amp is capable of.
