I'll tell you something about getting the most tone out of an Egnater Tweaker. I build and mod pedals, guitars, and amps (to a point). I bought one of these ONLY to use at the bench. I wanted one head, that wasnt an amp modeler, that would get at least "close" to a Blackface/AC/Marshall. I wasnt expecting much for $400 (dont know how much they are now, this was when they were new), but it really impressed me.
My friend bought one, and the first thing he wanted to do was replace all the tubes. I talked him into holding out, and getting a new transformer for it (Mercury Magnetics, about $160 with the components you need). I installed it for him (i hadnt done it to mine yet, which i did put in some NOS tubes). When we were finished, i put the original crappy Ruby tubes (crappy isnt correct, they're alright), and he still had his in. When we A/B'd them, his blew mine away. I put my NOS tubes in, and guess what; His still blew mine away, even with the better tubes in mine. For the price of a good set of tubes, you can get a new output transformer, and depending on the tubes you were looking for, probably get it installed for less. I mean, even if you're just going to use Groove Tubes power tubes and EH 12AX7's, you're looking at $110-125 for tubes.
I've since replaced the transformers in my Fender DRRI, Princeton Reverb, and AC 30. The other amps I have were built, so they already had good transformers in. THE TRANSFORMER IS THE MOST OVERLOOKED COMPONENT WHEN TRYING TO GET A GOOD TONE OUT OF A NEW AMP.
Unfortunately, I didnt record the A/B, but im sure you can find clips. There are a few good transformer makers besides Mercury, but please for all your sake, look into it. ESPECIALLY if you use Reissue amps. because besides everything being on a board now, just look at the transformers in an actual vintage Fender amp, and a Reissue and you can SEE the difference.
