Couple of VX and T/D module questions

I have a VX on the way and have a few questions. What are your preferred settings. And what power and preamp tubes do you like the best with the VX?

I also have a T/D module and was curious if the Twin or Deluxe side of the T/D sounds as good as the T/T or the DLX (D/D)? I'm trying to decide if it's worth having my T.D modded to either a T/T or D/D.

I'm really impressed with the Mod 50. I can't think of a gig I can't nail with this amp. I hope the E2 is ready for production after Namm.

The VX is just bad ass period,as for the T/D,I would pic the better side and have it modded to one or the other and yes it sounds great!!

On the T/D vs dual Twin vs dual DLX. The dual Twins and DLX's really sound better across both channels vs. the T/D. There is a compromise in tonality and with the T/D that I just couldn't get past. I picked up a DLX and compared the T/D to the DLX, and immediately sold my T/D. The DLX's clean and dirty tones were just better...and I didn't have issues w/ the B channel getting to woofy if I set the A channel to how I liked it. Same w/ the Twin. I think the dual Twin / DLX modules tones sound better than their respective T or D side of the T/D. I think the best Fender clean tone module that's out there is the DLX. Definitely one of the most versatile. Close second is the BMAN or XMAN.

Preamp tubes for VX - Jan Philips 5751 in V1 is a must IMHO. V2 is less of an issue. A good sovtek..or a good Tung Sol will suffice. Just get something low noise, with good tone. Settings for my VX are:

Bass - 10 oclock
Mids - noon
Treble - 10 oclock
Bright - 1
Bass - 1
ChA Gain - 10:30
ChB Gain - 10

The DLX settings are:

Bass / Mids / Treble - 10 oclock
Bright / Bass - 1
ChA Gain - 11 oclock
ChB Gain - 2 oclock

Tubes I recommend for VX or DLX are:

Tung Sol 6550s
NOS Jan Philips 6L6s

I use Ch. A of the VX for my "clean" sounds which still have some grit in them.
I use Ch. B for an ACDC amount of gain...maybe not quite that.

Settings are:
Bass Boost:0
Bright: 1
Ch A: Gain: 11 o'clock Volume: 2ish I think.
Ch B: Gain: 11o'click Volume: noonish

EQ:
Bass: 11 o'clock
Mids: 3 o'clock
Treble: noon

JAN 5751 in V1 and stock tube in V2. Stock 5881's in the poweramp.

Edit: This is with my current number 1 guitar which is a Jazzmaster

Aside from the EG3/4, the VX is my favorite module. It covers so much ground. I use it with a BB preamp and OCD and I can go from jangly clean up to a fat, wooly lead tone.

I usually run it like:
Bass- 10:00
Mid-2:00
Treble- 11:00
Bright 1
Bass 1

ChA gain-8:00
ChB gain-1:00

I really prefer it with EL34's but it sounds good with just about any power tube.

I agree with Aeroic on the the T/D vs T/T or DLX. I never liked the T/D, just never bonded with it. The Dlx I have now is much more alive and balanced.

No doubt, I only use the D side of the T/D that I got from you, Scott. I would have never needed your T/D had I not traded my D/D to Russ. :loco:

When I'm not so busy, my T/D is going to Jeff for a double D transformation!!

***Disclaimer: I use an M4, so I can crank the master on my VX without ill consequences for the fx post-preamp.***

I crank the master volume on my VX, and slowly increase gain on the A side until it has just enough grit to still sound clean, but interesting.

Amazing module.

I wonder what it would be like if you added the bassman controls to the VX module.
The reason I ask this is I was playing a HK statesman .when you hit the Twang switch it brought in those upper mids a bit.was a cool clean tone
Would the Fender eq crossed with the VX voicing be more like a Matchless type tone .
Just curious

bassman controls would add a lot of mids, and take away the voxiness of the module.

IMO, Jeff can add to this , or say I'm an idiot.

Doesn't VX have a lot of mids?
I would have thought it may make it a little warmer and more bottom end

the module, as a whole, might sound fairly "middy", but the vox tone controls have a much larger midrange dip than the Bassman tone stack.

it will turn into double mids.

IMO opinion the VX has a very specific character and I would never want to change it. It is what it is and does what it does very well, to me that would be similar to throwing a pair of humbuckers in a Strat because you want it to sound like a Les Paul.

I think I'm going to go ahead and get my T/D changed to a DLX. I can't wait until my VX arrives. Thanks for the suggestions. You guys rock!

IMHO the VX is perfect, and sounds voxy/jangly regardless of the power amp, speakers, etc. - i.e., Bruce has captured 'the vox sound' in the preamp itself, and although the power amp and speakers, etc. will obviously affect the end tone it will still have that VX magic - just a different flavor of it. Sounds even better since I swapped the stock mid-90s pups out of my Gretsch and put in TV Jones (in theory I could plug another guitar into the VX module, but why? ;) Actually I bet a Ric would sound great through it too . . . )

The only thing I would consider changing is having two channel A's so I could have one with a lower gain setting and one higher - though I can usually get there just by rolling down the volume before the preamp and backing off the strings (I find the module very 'touch sensitive' so you can often go from clean jangle to chimey break-up just by laying into the strings).

Have you tried a JP 5751 in V1 of the VX. Really helps clean up Channel A!! I love the VX even more w/ a JP 5751 in V1 for SURE! :)

I think it's a T/T with a Bassman eq.

It was a Twin module w/ a BMAN EQ. Not a BMAN w/ a VX EQ.

Having owned a Twin w/ a VX EQ...I didn't care for it. BMAN / Twin are close enough...that I think you could make the move to do a BMAN / Twin EQ swap...but the VX is definitely a MUCH different animal. I think it's fine as is. Definitely helps putting a lower gain tube in V1. Allows it to get cleaner...and much more dynamic.
