Damnit...Should I do it? (following Thump's idea)

So, I have an opprotunity to follow in Thump's footsteps and get a guitar from the year I was born (Once I read about that, I thought it was a cool idea). Thing is, I have the chance now and I am partially balking at it. Don`t know why :dunno:
So, I can trade this:

Any ideas or sage advice? I typically don`t like selling guitars as I bond to them moreso than amps, hence the balking on my behalf. I have actually only sold one guitar (Gretsch 6120) and it was to help fund our wedding, which was a worthwhile endeavor. So, any advice?

I would like to have one from the year I was born, but I'm guessing nice guitars from '69 are getting expensive? Just buy the other guitar outright if you can swing it! I hate selling stuff too.

play it first. If it speaks to you and your ears, buy it.

I believe that is part of the problem...I don`t have the chance to try before I buy, which is something I typically like to do :(

Yeah I was right....

The sucky thing is, when I was 21 I saw a '69-70ish Custom with 3 pickups at a local store for $450. I thought it was too worn looking for "that much" money.

Ideally I would just buy it outright, but I am a broke ass grad student so I can`t. This one is an 82' so it is still reasonable

Well I'm guessing the one you have is "nicer" than the '82 eh? I dunno man. You should keep/pick whichever one you like more. The older one should hold/go up in value better, but nicer is nicer y'know? Only you can really decide. I don't really like super fancy looking guitars so I'd prolly go with the older one.

I would ask every question posible about all the different problems you could posibly run into on the Silverburst (typical LP things), like if the nut has any low spots (buzz at first fret), high frets, dead spots, any buzz at all and if not, how is the action set on the guitar right now. Is there enough play on the truss rod, (make sure the truss nut is not backed all the way out). I ran into that on a used Custom last week. I went to add a little relief to the neck, and the nut was loose, so I couldn't adjust it.....had to bring it bad. There's a lot more questions I could come up with, but, I would ask everything you could think of so when you get it, there's no surprises.

If all seams good, I'd do it.

I am 99% certain all things are good to go on that end. I do need to check on the truss rod though. No dead spots or twists, frets are all even and in damn fine condition (it has never even had a fretdress so there is plenty to work with down the road). Thanks for bringing those points up though as there are a few things I hadn`t though of.

I'm with J.B. If the Silverburst is up to par, I'd trade.

That silverburst, if its in decent working order, is going to be worth alot more than your current les paul in a few years. That said, most of the silverbursts I've played were turds despite what tool fanboys say.

How do you mean they were turds?
Basically, i am looking for a LP Custom in either Tobacco Burst, Silverburst, or goldburst as I am not a huge fan of heritage cherry sunburst or the white/ebony. I am not after a silverburst because the guy from tool happens to play one. I would also grab a natural one as well...

Meh, most 1981 guitars totally suck.

I'll take an '88, please.

I always wanted a blue Les Paul, how much $$ outright?

Its not really blue, its more greenish blue.
For an outright sale I would be looking to get $2300~$2400 (its a custom shop LP elegant, there is a whole thread in the classified section on it w/ many more pics and details)

Oh that biatch is fine!!

That nick de-values it plenty though. :aww: But since we are fellow forumites here I'll give you top dollar for it in it's current condition. How's $850.00?

Yeah, I hate those little nicks. If it were mint it would easily go for $28 to $2900.

Early 80s les pauls are usually pretty terrible, heavy and dead sounding. There are always exceptions to the rules. Value wise it would definitely be a step up and it might sound good, who knows?

The ones with EMGs? Ive played one of those, pretty terrible. Worse than the early 80s ones.
