So I'm putting together a pedal board and i need a Delay pedal for my rig. I'll be using it mainly in the FX loop of my modded Marshall, but when i get the chance i may also use it in a Wet/Dry slave rig feeding the Delay pedal input from my amp's Line-out.

In my rack rig, i have a bunch of older Boss/Roland delays (RSP-550/SE-70/SDE-1000) which to my ears are the best i have heard. My absolute favorite being the Roland SDE series (I have an SDE-1000 that sounds unreal).

Are there any Delay pedals (New or Old), that can get close to those old Roland SDE style Delay tones?

I'm not really into Analog Delay or echo, that stuff is too smooth sounding for what i like. The Roland SDE-1000 i have, sounds warmer than any other Digital Delay i have heard, but its not as warm/smooth sounding as an Analog Delay or Echo.

Cheers!
Dan

Im selling my timefactor which will get you in that ballpark

I just picked up a TC electronic Nova repeater and for the price it is awesome. The ducking delay is awesome very andy timmons.

Dan,

I have a DD20 on my board that I use either in front of my JMP Bass set relatively clean or in the loop of my Engl Slowhand. It can be set so that 1 output gives dry and the other 100% wet. I really dig the delays on there:

hey Dan,

we share the same passion and opinion for the SDE-1000. that was my main delay for a long time and used as a backup to my echoplexes as well. I personally think that SDE-1000 and the Lexicon PCM-42 were the best delay rack units. If i'm not mistaking, isn't the BOSS DD-3 modeled after the SDE-1000...line effect version? I really like the Akai Headrush II pedal now because you can switch between a tape setting and digital delay setting and its got warmth. The Digidelay but digitech is also pretty cool.

good luck!

Ant

i'm a delay freak!..i agree that the roland stuff is pretty good..though i much prefer there old analog stuff.

i have a mooger fooger 104z thou it's analog, and a bit pricey!...the quality of the sound...and the options it has are incredible!

might be worth a listen.

Hey Ant!

Yeah i think i would have to agree, the SDE's and PCM-41/42 are the best delay rack units. At least to my ears anyway :)

If the Boss DD-3 is modeled after the SDE-1000 then that is what i will go for. That was already my current choice, which i was thinking of buying anyway!

I looked into so many other delays, like the Eventide, the new TC stuff etc etc. Nothing comes close to those old SDE series delays. You dont realise just how good they are until you hear one with your own ears, and then compare it to other stuff.

The only thing the DD-3 wouldnt have, is the modulation on the repeats.. and that's one of the features of the SDE series that im very fond of. But if the DD-3 can cop the overall character of the SDE delays, then i can live without the modulation feature :)

Does the Akai Delay have modulation at all?

Cheers!

Im not sure about the Timefactor yet.. The ones i have heard, had a very distinct Eventide character to the tone of the Delay, which is very different to what im going for right now!

the Akai does not have a modulation feature unfortunately. It does have a looping feature which is fun to mess with.

Glad your digging the SDE-1000 bro, I love my 3000 and it has spoiled me. The trails are some of the best sounding out there imo.

I am using a DL-4 right now for the board, cool that I have instant access to 3 different settings and the sounds are good. Not great but good, I should have researched the DD-20 more before buying.

I'v owned a Dl4 and a few DD20's, DD3, DD2, MXR Carbon Copy, TC Nova delay.....i think that's it. The Damage Control Timeline i own now is my favorite. It really doesn't have that many modes, but everything is available whenever you want. You can add modulation whenever you want, or anolog sounds on any patch. Drawbacks are that it's huge and doesn't have a lot of on-the-fly versatility, but it's MIDI.

I think it's the most transparant delay I've used. Doesn't mess with your sound at all.

The Eventide is very very digital sounding,,hard to get away from the robotic vibe....

I still love the Lexicon PCM 42, I havent used everything out there, but I think that ones hard to beat. ;)

I have heard that, also big love for the PCM70.

Nevermind the cork-sniffers take on Line6. The DL4 is a great unit you'll always be glad you have around.

Good to know Scott, cheers! Yeah the DD-20 does look pretty cool

Yup im spoiled by that SDE-1000, the trails are so smooth and the modulation sounds amazing. Im half tempted to buy another 1000 for my rack rig and use it purely for chorus, then use the other for delay!
