Diezel 2x12 w/ hempcones or V30s?

Hi guys, sorry if something like this has been posted before.

I'm just about to order a new 2x12 Diezel cab to go with my VH4. I spoke to James, the UKs distributer and he is recommending the rear-loaded 2x12, and is also saying that Peter is raving about the hemp cone speakers. As I won't be able to try it out before purchase, I'm looking for recommendations on front-loaded or rear-loaded speakers, and more importantly the difference or recommondation of the hemp cones compared with the V30s?

If it helps, I play relatively technical metal (in the vein of Testament meets a less detuned Meshuggah) and already own a Mesa 4x12 cab, which I'm considering using in addition to the new Diezel 2x12 in my live rig.

Thanks!

With having your style of playing in mind a absolutely recommend a frontloaded cab with G12K100 or V30 and G12K100 mixed. Rearloaded just doesn't work for that kind of playing with the VH4 imo. The Hempcones sound nice but to me they were not built to do brutal metal with them.

I was in Dillingen and tried a rearloaded V30, fronloaded V30, frontloaded G12K100 and hempcone proto. Frontloaded G12K100 (mixed with V30 in my case) by far won the battle!

I would also consider trading the Mesa cab for a new Diezel FL. In fall last year I went to the studio with my band and had the chance to play a Mesa Recto cab right next to my Diezel cab and the Mesa cab sounded like a piece of crap. Undefined, fizzy and boomy

Hi Dan,

I'm playing a Herbert through a 4x12" V30 Diezel FL (chassis is first series ca. 1996). Before the Herbert I owned a VH4S (The early blue one). I'm playing metal, kind of progressive, sometimes kind of technical approach.
In the past years I tried a lot of cabinets, but none of them could keep up with my Diezel V30FL.

I also tried the Schmidt-Prototype through a 2x12" RL w/hemp cones. I used my Strat w/Joe Barden PU's on that try-out. It was an unbelieveable great sound - the cabinet and the Schmidt were the perfect match. One of the best tones for that style I ever heard.
IMO the hemp cones sounding not as direct and punchy as the V30 by far, but they got a really great bluesy tone, best for clean and crunchy sounds or creamy leads. ( I'm planning to recone a vintage Vox AC-50 cabinet with the Tone Tubbies.)
I can't imagine doing metal riffing with that speakers/cabinet.
Have you ever tried a Diezel 4x12" V30 FL with your VH4?

I know there are a lot of guys playing a VH4 or Herbert through a Mesa cabinet, but I can't understand. IMO it's like driving a Porsche with small and thin tires... ;)
Of course, it's a matter of indivdual taste as it always is!

If you like to hear the V30's, check out https://www.myspace.com/worldcomedown
All heavy rhythm guitars are played over a Herbert with Diezel 4x12" V30 FL.

so, I hope this helps!

that's exactly what I experienced!

Thanks for the advice guys.

I've never had the opportunity to try out my VH4 through a Diezel cab unfortunately. I bought both my VH4 and mesa cab roughly 3 years ago, where the only Diezel distributer was 600miles away and I couldn't afford the cab!

I don't really have the space for another 4x12 right now, and carrying a 4x12 is fine when the rest of my band are around to help, but I'd like a 2x12 so I can cart it up and downstairs myself.

I'm also planning on running my peavey 6505 through the Mesa 4x12, and my VH4 through a new Diezel 2x12. I can't praise the VH4 enough, if I was only allowed one amp this would obviously be it (and it has been my sole live amp for 3 years now) but I'm also a fan of that classic tubescreamer/5150 tone - and I'd like the best of both worlds. :D

It sounds like the V30s are more for me, if the hemps are more for bluesy stuff - but the front loaded vs rear loaded speakers is still a hard decision. It seems that for Herbie guys who play metal, Frontloadeds are a must. But I find the VH4 quite tight and dry already, and the Diezel website does recommend RL for the VH4. And James from Diezel UK said he heard a VH4 through a new rear loaded 212 cab and said it was the sweetest tone he'd ever heard.

If you plan on getting a 5150 keep the Mesa. Those two work very well together.

For the VH4 I recommend a frontloaded 2x12. The rearloaded is a great cab but in combination with a VH4 you have the problem that the speaker is quite "softly" mounted to the baffle because of the rubber ring around the speaker whereas the frontloaded speakers are directly mounted with the chassis against the baffle. This "soft" mounting in combination with the extremely string low mids the VH4 produced lead to frequency extermination and therefore is some places a very boomy and in other place around the cab a very fizzy sound with no lows. I experienced those problems and they are gone since I got my frontloaded Diezel cab.
The VH4 won't get any tighter or harder to play because of the frontloaded cab but the cab will be able to transport the sound the VH4 produces much better.

Cheers Jaymz - I already have the 5150, and like you say it does work very well with the Mesa cab. Same with EMG pickups.... totally suited for the 5150, but I'm aware Diezel's were designed for more vintage guitars than high-output actives such as EMGs.

My main guitar is a Blackmachine custom 6 string with EMG 81/85 by the way... don't know if that makes too much difference to speaker reaction.

Technical metal, a Blackmashine, a VH4 - I'd get a FL 4x12" in a minute - and I'm sure that James/UK also suggested that, no?

I'd love a 4x12 but it wouldn't be practical at the moment... how does the FL 2x12 compare?

James was kind of recommending one of the new RL 212...

Well, I'm not a tech metal guy - but I own(ed) both 2x12", RL and FL.
The combination of them was very good, played alone I always used the RL.
The FL 2x12" is extremely "in your face" and has so much attack.

Here's a pic of both where you can "see" the difference

Olaf, let me ask you sumthin´

Talking about 2x12s here:

is a FL better for blues-rock than a RL is for Metal?

I wanna get a 2x12 later on but I´m not sure if I should go with a FL or RL. I play both blues rock and hard rock - metal, but I play more blues rock than metal.

RL Joey. The FL is for hardcore guys only IMO. The RL 2x12" is amazing for everything - IMO.

ey olaf, what kind of tubes do the Little joe takes besides 6v6s ?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that Jamie shares my view that the Herbert naturally goes with the FL cabs, as they provide the insane directness needed to translate the earth-shaking low end the Herbie puts out, while the VH4 is ridiculously tight as it is, and can reap the benefits of the "soulful" warmth and woodiness of the RL cabs.
Nothing wrong with the opposite combinations though, and I'm yet to try the new Dillingen cabs, though I'm hoping to check them out soon.

6L6GCs, Joey. But I'm pretty sure that the bias circuitry needs to be modded then.

modded as in Re-bias? or something more complex?

I just purchased 2 Mesa Rec 2X12's Dan, tried them through my mesa roadster and lonestar and also the herbert but they don't seem to push my buttons. Keep going back to my bogner 4X12's. Think i may get rid of them but will play around with them a bit more

Would be interesting to hear the Diezel 2x12

Same experience here. Had a Mesa 2x12 that I played a Roadster, my old IIC+ and my Einstein through. My Bogner 4x12 sounded worlds better. I would love to try a Diezel 2x12 RL.
