Speaking of preamps....I think the best bang for the buck out there is the mesa studio preamp. I have one and it nails the early Metallica sound as well as a number of other heavy tones out there. I seem them on ebay for anywhere between 300 and 400$. I had heard they stopped making them because it was essentially the same preamp as in the mark 2c and people were starting to realize they could get the same sound for a fraction of the price....it even has a built in spring reverb which is a nice touch..I run it thru a strategy 500 and the lead channel just pummels! it actually sounds excellent paired up with my vh4s. I run the strategy and vh4s into 4 4x12 mesa halfback cabs. I bought the cabs and the stategy and studio pre all back in 88 at ace music in miami...over 20 year old gear and still crankin with the best of them!

I used to have the Studio and the Quad Preamp, ran them with the Mesa 295 power amps. They are great preamps and it was also a great power amp but heavy as heck!!! I really dig the older Mesa amps a lot, especially the Quad preamp, still one of my favorites of all time.
