I used a 2120 for a few years. They do have a tube pre-amp. If you use the tube high gain settings, it gets pretty noisey. The effect section on the 2101 is not as flexible as the 2112 or 2120, but still much cooler than anything they are currently making.
sorry bro, i gotta disagree on this, in a nice way though! i used one extensively (actually 2) for about 12 years.
the effects editing on the 2101 blew away the 2112 and the 2120.... google the comparison and see that the main issue with the 2101 was that people hated that it was pretty much infinitely editable, and you could build insanely complex algorithims in it (esp with 2 ppc cards and the 3.01 version upgrade). people wanted more plug and play units from digitech, and that's ultimately what the 2112 and the 2120 ended up being.
i've played the 2112 and 2120 too... didn't LOVE them, though they were great units too at the time, and there were things i liked that they offered that i wished the 2101 had (like the edit knobs, instead of buttons) but, the 2101 just offered SO MUCH more tweakability and buildability...it was basically the axe fx of its day with no modeling (that coming from a friend that has an axe and had a 2101). the whole 21xx series was fantastic though.
i go back and forth of grabbing another one for 200 on ebay....and just using it for effects and a backup.
yeah, sounds gay, but, i got great sounds out of it and would own another if given the right deal.
it had 2 preamp tubes in it too, and you could change them out with different results. i ended up using groove tubes in it.
just out of curiousity, when you power it up, what version does it say? do you know if it has 2 ppc210 cards in it?
