Hey Guys..

I tried the SD Dimebag pickup yesterday at a pawn shop where I work for the first time and I was really impressed and that's not easy as I usually use an active pup. Anyway, the thing had this crunch I just loved. I was playing it in a Korean Ibanez S series guitar which isn't the best guitar in the world but it sounded great with that pickup. Anyone else like this pup or think it's cool ?

Anyone know what active pup would be closest in EQ to this one?

Thanks guys!
T

I assume you're talking about the dimebucker. Why does it have to be active, if you like the dimebucker why not just use that? Or even better get a Bill Lawrence L500XL either BLUSA or B&B, that's what it's based off.

This. Just go to Wilde Pickups (Bill and Becky) and order the L500XL. There are many options, prices are very reasonable. Last pickup I ordered took 3-4 weeks to get but was worth the wait. Quality stuff.

I haven't messed with a BLUSA but all the comparisons I've seen said at least for the current ones they're basically identical. I've ordered 5 or so from B&B, never even had to wait for one, and at half the price of the Duncan "copies". Also not a big selling point but I really like their pickup rings that sit snug to the pickup.

I like actives for a lot of reasons. Such as being able to use long cords, not getting shocked as easily, etc, etc,. That's the main reason, but I really did like that pup. I was shocked at how much I liked it. Cool pup! I'll check it out. I thought Bill L passed? Does his wife still sell pups or something may I ask? Thanks for the replies folks. I appreciate it.

The family still makes them. Great products at great prices.
I got a satin black one for my PRS Åkesson a couple of months ago.
I already had one in another guitar, plus a set of Keystones in my Tele.

another vote here for the bill and becky 500. killer pickups for that tone, and a lot of other tones reside there as well.

Thanks guys and gals. I appreciate it.. Very much. I'll have to order one soon

So is the Bill and Becky pickup the same as the others that I keep seeing that say it's a pickup made by someone doing business as originally that Dime used. I of course have not tried the Bill and Becky's or the Jacobwitz DBA Bill Lawrence pup, but did try the Dimebag Duncan pup and really liked it. If the others have the same tone as the Dimebag Duncan pup then I'll buy the Bill and Becky pup! Whew.. LOL..

Thanks
Tim

Why not take the pickup out of the guitar and put something else in it?

Most people that would buy a S wouldn't want the Dimebucker anyways.

There's a bit of a story behind B&B and BLUSA. I don't know the story too well so I won't attempt to retell it, but B&B and BLUSA used to be one company, they split in like '84. Essentially the same pickup, and neither guys are actually named Bill Lawrence.
It's been a couple years but there was a comparison floating around between the B&B L500XL, the BLUSA L500XL, and the SD Dimebucker. The B&B and BLUSA were pretty much identical and the Dimebucker was slightly more compressed and more gain. I have a B&B L500L, L500XL, and Dimebucker and imo there's a good difference between the 3. L500L for more traditional sounding pickup but tighter, XL is high gain, super tight, and on the bright side, the Dimebucker is just too much for me. Don't have any experience with BLUSA but I'm sure they're just as nice as B&B's.

bare knuckle cold sweat is the best Dime-like voiced pickup I ever played

X2n. Great blade pickup.

I got several guitars loaded with dimebuckers and bill Lawrence's. I love them. I do a great drunken dimebag impersonation. Got two warhead stacks too. Whoo-hoo! Think I'll do it tonight!

This is where you want to go...

Get the L-500XL in whatever color you want.
I went through a Bill Lawrence phase years ago and I tried most of his offerings. Originally not knowing the difference, I tried the BLUSA 500XL because they used to be sold in the Stew-Mac catalog.
Bill & Becky's version was quieter and the build quality is much better. Excellent harmonics.
I didn't even realize that Bill had passed until I saw this thread. Very sad. I talked to him over the phone a few times. He was a very nice guy.
All of my orders came with a personally signed postcard from Bill saying thank you.

Hey Man,

Thanks so much. Great response. I'm going to have to try that one. I hope it's quiet enough is all. That's part of the reason I always used Actives, even if I didn't totally like the tone. (Although I am a Tone nut for the most part) Anyway, I hate to use Noise Suppressors, and eq's, etc, just to get rid of the humm and hiss, etc, and still get enough gain, etc,. I'm not that big of a "Gain" guy really compared to some that use so much now days. I'm a child of the late 70's and 80's, so that's the time period of music I like to play..

So, thank you for telling me about Bill and Becky's pup being quieter. I was worried about that.
Regards

Hi Capulin.

Hey, Great question. Actually, the guitar isn't mine. I just work at this pawn shop and they had it there. I only work there part time, but I'm the go to guy for guitar stuff because I'm one of the few players in this very very small rural area I live in. That and guns, is the reason I work there. Actually, the guitar isn't that expensive, but I don't need anything but the pickups so I'll just buy them..

Regards

For dimes tone you need a Bill and Becky 500XL and then flip that bastard backwards in the bridge position.
