All m guitars have metal inserts in the body of the guitar and the machine screws for the pickups move up/down just like regular ring mounted pickups. What's the problem?

Not this one. These screw right into pre-drilled holes in the wood.

It's the foam under the pickup that's the problem. It's hard as a rock. This is why it takes so much force to compress it. Needs to be spongier.
Ive used drinking straws in the past.
And surgical rubber tubing.
Found it was easier then messing with foam.

A short piece of r/c silicone fuel tubing works great also.

Mine are Mayones Duvells. They don't use wood screws. They use machine screws with inserts in the body. And the screws have springs on them, with foam under the pickup. So they behave just like ring mounted. Do other guitar companies just use wood screws? That seems like a nightmare.

My Duvells are the only direct mount pickup guitars I’ve ever owned. I changed the pickups a few weeks ago and the machine screw set up was what I was expecting even though I’d never really given it much thought. It seems stupid to screw straight into the wood. I can’t believe higher end guitar builders would do that. I guess they don’t expect people to change pickups that often

All my guitars (10+) are direct mount. Can be combersome sometimes, but not a big deal. Just have to pay attention to what you’re doing and use the right size screws. I went to Ace Hardware a few years ago and bought a bunch of different sized ones.
You can still use small springs between the guitar and the pickups as well. Or use foam.
I like the direct mount way better than the rings. Rings cheapen the guitar to me, but to each their own.
