Do power tubes matter?

Fuck you and the horse you rode in on
That's it. I'm packing my tan pants and leaving

He got mad at us one day and sad he’s leaving . He didn’t like it if people said his Irs color everything to sound the same . Look I love his 8 string playing and his 8 string tone . But it sounds the same a lot even when he switches amps . Hes not a bad dude . He just don’t like constructive criticism . Which in reality we all do that to each on RT .Constantly .
Didn't he also get aggravated because he got some guff about just dropping videos and not really participating in the forum? I don't care if youtubers post their videos here, but it's bad forum etiquette to not actively participate and just drop videos for clicks and run.

+1 Very bad etiquette. Unless you have a relationship like I do with @GearGasms. I'm the Archie Bunker in that relationship and he's my Edith in that I abuse the shit out of him and he just keeps coming back for more.

Not going to watch the video, but I love it when randos on the Internet think numerous different companies all conspire to develop amps with different tubes for no reason.

Had a conversation on this and preamps tubes with a well known guy in the music world - his explanation was that there's no discernable difference in what a power tube sounds like, other variables like the volume pushing the speaker cab are basically what you hear as differences. Blind folded you'd not be able to hear the differences in a KT88 or EL84 as the same volume level.

I had a thread going on TGP about this last month

I hear absolutely no difference in PT tubes within the same class/power range
not even with PA tubes

I will hear a difference if i go with different PA tube gain factors

Oh god . This dude says everything is the best ever and makes them sound identical with his set up . I’m sure the tubes don’t sound differnt with how he does his thing .
Or maybe they really don't sound different? Other than to a bunch of keyboard warriors.

All you need is a microterror, a kustom cab, a realistic mic from radioshack, and some tab cola.

This exactly . Don’t just spam us . Be a part of other shit but your own

I’ve actually been wondering recently how much difference tube types make. Last weekend I modded my jet city jca50 crunch channel to 2204 specs (had already changed nfb to 100k off 4 ohm tap), and it’s pretty thick and chunky sounding. It has 6L6gc’s and probably a bit more stout power supply than a standard 2204. I haven’t played a real 2204 (or el34 clone) so I don’t know how thick it’s supposed to be. But I like it.

Seen that YouTube video come across my feed but haven’t watched it yet. Do they matter - yes. Do they matter as much as other interactions - (my opinion only) no. My main concern these days after years of wanting to learn/experience down that rabbit hole, is vacuum power tubes just need to be reliable and consistent. The tonal character is negligible compared to tonal effects of speakers, output transformer/speaker impedance curve interaction, even preamp vacuum tubes. With very few manufacturers left, it’s more who do you trust to provide you a reliable tube. Even then, it’s doesn’t account for shipping bumps and bruises.
