Do the UA OX box speaker simulation algorithm's sound better than standard IR's?

I keep coming across US OXbox clips that seem to sound more like a mic'd speaker/cab when compared to the standard IR's in like the Torpedo IR's load box.....:dunno:

I watched a UA video were the Engineer explained why the UA method of speaker simulation was different to how standard IR's are modeled....what's the difference?

I don’t fully know but I believe the OxBox goes way more in depth regarding distant micing and capturing a good “room” tone, instead of putting all the emphasis on a single mic touching the grill cloth, like most IRs do.

But doesn't the Ox have issues with 3rd party IR's? You only get whatever cabs they have loaded into their eco system and there are noted software issues that cause noise/ lag and you have to reset losing your presets. Also, they are not going to be developing further for it so it is what it is and won't grow. I was looking into one of those boxes the other day for fun and the above is essentially what I found out and the reason quite a few are on the used market. They do sound good though.

UA could have absolutely killed it with the ox box but instead they just dropped it completely and from what i understand are no longer offering any support or future updates for the product.

Seems like a very short-sighted move but maybe they know something about the direction that the industry is heading and don't want to mess with it/be a part of it?

Yeah I've heard that as well....that there is no support whatsover, I've heard that about the OX stomp. I hate the fact that it is WI-FI connection only as well but damn if the clips don't sound good.

Maybe they have something new coming out who knows????

honestly if they come out with something new (ox box 2.0?) that would be terrific, because so many people who I consider to have good tone seem to love their original oxboxes.

surely with the way the industry is going, they won't just stay out of it? but maybe they've decided they don't care to cater to guitarists as much as they care to cater to general recording? i dont know but seemingly the decision to run the product the way they have feels strange from an outsiders perspective :dunno:

That's too bad because their approach is noticeably different sounding at least to my ears. But I don't have interest in buying a boat anchor with no support. I have read some people saying their OX box wifi died and it's no longer usable since it won't connect through a USB port so that is a hard pass for me but I do think they sound better.

holy shit i had not heard that about the Wifi/USB port issue....damn that would suck big time!

The inability to use 3rd party IRs were always a no-go for me. I don’t need the other bells and whistles, just really want a good reactive load.

Yeah it has the speaker break up and an intuitive way to mix in room mics. UA stuff sounds amazing but is such a pain in the ass work with. They just don't think through the actual workflow.

UA fucking sucks ass. There I said it.

Their stuff sounds good, but it's expensive, feature-limited, relies on Bluetooth/USB for deeper features, and has fuck all for support.

Yea I hear you, I don’t remember when I got my Apollo twin but I feel like it’s been close to ten years if not more and it still runs every time I turn it on haha. I think I’m coming up on the point where it’s software will not be supported by apples OS upgrades though and the idea of WiFi/bluetooth based connection is just retarded lol

Hopefully one of the bigger units will still support wired connectivity…not that I’ve looked into it though

That's the main reason I went Fryette instead of Ox.

Some day I hope to try out the features of my PowerStation other than attenuating my amp…

lol what are you waiting for? Just send the line out to your interface and you’re good to go!

Also I love using the fx loop, you use that yet?

I use it for attenuation and loop for my JTM45.
I haven’t had an interface or computer in years…

Probably my next purchase will be an iPad and interface.
My buddy is all over that stuff and haven’t used an amp in a while.
