Hi guys,
I am able to buy a Marshall 4102 combo for a good price. It`s the 2204 circuit from 1982. Only question I have, if it looks ok and I should jump for it? Seller says that the pots were changed. Apart from that, it is in original condition. Maybe some of you experts can have a look on the amp?
Thanks

Looks good to me.
But I'm just here admiring all the free space inside that chassis!

Looks good to me overall. Changed tone pot is the only "mod" I can see. No big deal.
I don't see any 1k screen grid resistors on the power tube sockets, so I would think about adding those.
Also, for the other Marshall guys: is that ceramic cap on the mid pot something Marshall put in the combos? Seem to remember something like that, but not sure.

Yes. Maybe I will convert it to a head, so one of the legs will be detached.

Ok, so there you go.....
I had the 4010 which is the same amp in a smaller chassis and 1x12 combo. I did end up snipping the mid cap. How much of a difference it made is debatable but I was sure I liked it better without

Looks like the bright cap on the gain pot has been clipped, easy to reattach if you want it…

That’s an amp modder’s dream. Look at all that space inside. The things I would do to that…. (don’t tell Jason. A part of him dies when I send him pics of me drilling holes in an 800 or JMP).

It seems the lower plate voltage amps delete the screen resistors. The last one I saw like that had 390vdc B+. It’d be interesting to see if this is a low plate voltage amp.

Looks like the output transformer was replaced.

Can you take some pics of the transformer code?

But, yes, it looks great overall...

THIS. Easy enough to do; I'll never understand guys that clip them in these and NMV Marshalls. Neuters the amp IMO. In the MV Marshalls its a pretty small ceramic; not sure of the value? My 72 has a 5K Lemco.
Do you know what the standard bright cap in a MV is and if they changed over time, like JMP 220X vs JCM800?

Will check that but it will take some time as I am going on holiday after picking it up

I don't; I tried that mod years ago (lifting 1 leg of the cap) and after trying it, immediately soldered it back. It's a small cap though, going off memory. Someone here or in the Tech sub forum could tell you.

I was thinking of that too, but then I`ve found other examples of 4101 combos (see the picture) and the transformers look as new as the ones of this amp. The Drake-stickers are hidden on the sides, but at least the mounting screws are looking the same.
