A lot of us are here because of immigration. My mother wanted to become an American citizen, learned the language, and passed a citizenship test. She wanted to accept the principles and morals this country was founded on. It used to be looked down on to take a handout or welfare. The American dream was that you could be any color or race, and still be successful with hard work. Most foreigners still look at us this way obviously. There used to be a different mindset in the US., where people didn't want to accept a handout.
