Doug Aldrich Sig Amp...

Amazing, good for him and no doubt will be priced competitively and be good bang for buck. Assuming blackstar listened most to him and they have brand power and pricing that means sales.

I wish I was interested as I'm a fan of Doug's playing but this amp has no interest for me whatsoever. I was interested when there was talk years back of a Suhr sig amp but that never happened either.

I might be interested if they get REALLY cheap on the used market, but there's no way in hell i'm paying 1400$ for a chinese made boat anchor that can never be serviced if something goes wrong

I think blackstar gets a bad rap tonewise though - they don't sound bad at all

The Bob Mould amp they did sounded great, though it wasn't RT high gain

Sounds just like his original circuit from the 80’s, all top end and no low end or low mids. No growl either.

I’ll be changing my mod name to the Dark Angel from here forward. I don’t want to get into a PR issue with an active brand/artist.

That's a good idea tbh

Always a fan of Doug. Just not a fan of that amp brand. If one comes to my store, I will definitely give it a try.

I do agree they get a bad wrap tone wise but some of it is earned. @braintheory likes to use cardboard to describe the UU and I’ll use it to describe blackstar. You have to go the extra mile in detail of design to mitigate that problem and it’s not a cost saving measure to do so. The second financial departments run companies is when stuff starts sounding off or odd. That’s the problem with a lot of low price point companies honestly. They don’t aim for quality, just fit as much as possible on one single board and make them nuts complex with generic components. It’s not any different than Engl.

No comment on the repair statement, any technician worth their weight can repair anything. It’s just at low cost amps the question begins is it worth it or are you dabbling into throw away territory.

The cardboard quality is really obvious in the video johnygtar posted - YIKES 😬

That is either some really poorly recorded guitar or that amp does not sound like the Aldrich mod at all

That’s what all of their HT series sounds like in recording of videos but in person they don’t sound that bad - still nothing to cheer about. It’s really odd/weird to be honest. You get what I mean though - my amps I design as well as Jeremy at GZ go way beyond what most could fathom to get that high quality gain and punch. People wonder why some amps cost what they do and this is what you get at lower price points even from a signature model.

Honestly? I’d run a reissue 1992 5150 over that tone. In the room a slightly modded 5150 would destroy a blackstar.

BS have a terrible reputation as problematic.
Doug looks like he lives in a van down by the river.

Man, I had no idea they did a sig amp for Bob Mould. Interesting choice on their part.

That's what the "artisan" amp they did is, he's just not the type to put his name on stuff as far as I understand it

it's crazy watching him use that same strat deluxe that he's used since sugar with a modern amp like that

It is mind blowing how large amp companies fuck up new amp launches with horrible videos. Both videos are terrible examples of how to do it.
