DSL100HR. Is it just me?

If you really want the name for short cash, find a jcm2000 DSL - with a nice boost, they can sound quite good.
I would suggest newer than 04 as well. I almost picked one up local, but they stopped making replacement boards, and they are like hen's teeth now. :(

I bought one a while ago as a backup for gigs. It has good versatility with the larger footswitch, and the easier bias adjustment and aux-in are great to have. There was an issue with lag when switching channels on the earlier HRs when using the 2-button footswitch. It sounds fine, a bit plasticy though, and does seem to mush out a bit on higher gain settings. Not a big fan of the e34ls that came with it either.

Will probably sell it and pick up a JCM2000 at some point. I'll trade the versatility for better tone.

This amp sounds like shit. Every review online raves about How great this amp is. There's even one guy on YouTube who says he likes it better than his Friedman's and Bogner's. On the Marshall forum they are going on about how this is the greatest modern Marshall even better than the JVM I commented that I found it thin and had a mushy bottom end and I got roasted , called a noob and basically told I don't know what I'm doing. I'm far from a noob I bought my first J CM 800 brand new in 1987 I've had Many nice amps, including old Marshalls and know how to dial them in. Side by side through the same cabs my splawn quick rod destroys this DSL and it's not even close maybe there's something wrong with the particular one I have but the overdrive or distortion has no body. The bass totally flubs out with any type of low notes or Palm mutes . the only way it's usable is with the bass totally off and then the top end is totally unbearable. like I said maybe it's something with this unit but I've also owned a DSL40 and the DSL 20 and found them both unbearable. I did check the bias and changed preamp tubes with no change. Anybody own one?

Its just you.
(And a few other typical people who cant seem to get good tone outta anything by itself because they dial the amp like a dipshit with their dipshit flubby strings on drop tunings. You know.... typical people who bash amps when its them making it sound like ass. Often times never actually even turning the amp past 2-3 overall volume to boot, hilarious 😂

Either you had bad tubes or you're a total f?ckin n00b. Those amps sound very good. The H and the HR.

Edit:
And no they don't need a boost to be tight and brutal. Unless you use too much low end and or pick like a 12 year old Chinese girl of course, I guess you'll think it needs a boost then.

Stops spreading bullshit 💯

I watched Leon Todd's review of VHT Ultralead yesterday and what caught my ear was mention about stiffness of VHT which reminds him DSLs and I have to agree. The same with JVMs and Jubilees. Not fun amps to play at all. For example remped JVM sound superb on Ola Englund album but in person there is a lot of missing. I like DSL40 CR more than 100W because added compresion helps the amp to be more like JCM800 feel-wise.

Some amps are for tight serious players so they will expose the weaklings pretty quickly. Usually not fun for the weaklings.

🤏

Blue Parfart.... is hilarious, if you can't get a usable sound out of a dsl anything, it's not the amp that blows. It's you who blows. 🤣

I very muched enjoyed playing an ultra lead. It has an amazing voice and a good amount of punch. It just felt a bit tiny next to wizards.

Maybe the stifness is the immediacy. It feels good for tight rhythm

I dont know that everyone that dislikes a stiff amp is a shitty player. But i know that is said often. Maybe we like the more open/stiffer amps because they seem tighter out of the gate and have more clarity.

I love the sound of a more open amp. I dont know if they go hand in hand with punch, but i like that too

Never said it was unusable.

You could fairly simply through the entire month eating only one menu, three times a day, and that still fucking blows. You could drive a car with a broken power steering. That's usable.

Same goes for this amp. Why do I want to live with its grainy, tinny sound when a TSL doesn't, a 900 doesn't and a boosted 800 or Plexi sure doesn't?

EDIT: No, "tinny" ain't the right word. I can't quite express what I dislike about this amp, but it's the same thing I hate about the Duncan Distortion

Yeah there's a huge difference between preference and unusable

Obviously anyone can make just about anything sound "usable", so if that was the metric, we'd sound like a youtube channel where "New Product is awesome, and everything is awesome!"

Weirdly, I love the duncan distortion, it's a classic - it's one of the least versatile pickups on planet earth though lol

It's good for like punk thrash aggression

I don't think the new DSLs are terrible, but I do think they are a couple notches below the 900 and the old JCM2000s

and a whole lot worse than a 2203/4

The usable/unusable dichotomy is interesting because I don't think i've ever had a completely unusable piece of gear - it was always usable for SOMETHING

You need magic toan hands that have an 80hz hipass apparently, then your eyes would be opened to an entire new world of magic toan

where apparently every amp that works for you, works for everyone, or it's "user error"

I can appreciate what it does (ie: be loud and tight), but whenever I play one I always think "I would prefer playing a JB or Custom"

I don't think I've actually owned any unusable piece of gear that wasn't broken. I guess there was that one time a tech messed up a Floyd installation and placed the bridge too far back and it never intonated. But I guess that counts as "broken" :ROFLMAO:

Oh my god that would drive me absolutely fucking insane

I'm not really OCD, but i'm very particular about tuning

Especially having open chords ring true higher up on the neck

And that kind of "unusable" would drive me crazy

@ChuggNorris Can You teach us this magic?

I was at a customer's house the other day. They were old hippies. They had an old Tube Tv on the porch. I told them that they should salvage the tubes out of it and sell them on Ebay.

They had no idea what tubes were. They had no idea what Ebay was.
The woman asked me, "Since you know of this Ebay, could you take the tubes out and sell them for us?"

Everything is just mysticism and magic for some.

I find it a LOT more likely he just prefers or tolerates looser tones than most people than that he's magically discovered a technique secret that literally no one else in the world has ever discovered.

There's a handful of amps that I can make work without a boost, sure, but he pretends a recto doesn't need one lol

I'll believe in the "magic" when I hear a close miced clip of it - until then, i'm calling retarded bullshit on it

Yeah. I can make some amps work with no boost for slower stuff. My amp is tighter than a wizard (aside from hellrazor) out of the gate, but not as tight as uber ultra, hermansson, Monomyth, Ground zero, etc.

It still plays well with boosts, but I go back and forth on using/vs not using. Generally it comes down to not wanting to gate. I have a love/hate relationship with gates.

I kinda remember Chugg's stuff sounding good. But I would have to go back and check since he won't post any goddamn clips latey (pot/kettle i know)

He's never posted an actual close mic of anything, so there's no actual way of knowing

Only phone clips
