Might do better in a heavier, mahogany bodied guitar like an LP
Never played the hunter, but the Demon is sort of a paf EQ wise, with very piercing high treble, lacking some mids Imho, and very moderate output. It's a nice pickup if you want to give some bite to smooth, dark and muddy guitars cause it's very articulate under gain, but ime if you're in a band you might suffer the lack of mids, and sometimes having a lil more output would be more than welcomeDoes anybody know the difference between the Hunter and Screaming Demon ?
Not even close the SD is in the PAF range, 9-10k and the Hunter is 16k. Different construction/parts, different wire, etc.Does anybody know the difference between the Hunter and Screaming Demon ?
Haven't had time to install itSo how did ya like it?
Let me know when you get to try it. If it's mid prominent like a custom custom but less smooth in the treble, I might be very interestedHaven't had time to install it
Their deal with George Lynch ended. Not sure about the Screamin' Demon, but for that pickup, it did.I searched for "The Hunter" pickup a while back and it's almost impossible to find . I wonder why they stopped making it ?
BTW, not sure on what the official statement is in it, but the Seymour Duncan CS can usually build you whatever you want. I've read a few posts on the SD forum from people that have requested the CS to wind them a Hunter, and they said no. And then to wind them a Hunter and call it something else, and they said no.I searched for "The Hunter" pickup a while back and it's almost impossible to find . I wonder why they stopped making it ?
Yeah I think it depends on the artist and contract......sometimes contracts stipulate that they cannot sell the pickup even if it's just renamed. Other times the CS can make a pickup to those specs and just not name it by the artist's signature model name. I don't see the Hunter pop up too often for resale but it does sometimes, for those interested I'd say just keep looking.BTW, not sure on what the official statement is in it, but the Seymour Duncan CS can usually build you whatever you want. Not sure what terms Lynch and Duncan are at. He did get a signature Arcane pickup, though.
The Hunter is 15K-something Ceramic. The Screamin' Demon is 10K-something Alnico 5. The Hunter is just standard screw slug setup. The Demon is hex/flathead.Does anybody know the difference between the Hunter and Screaming Demon ?
It's probably oversized magnet, then, not coils. So I just soldered one into my Gibson V. Thing measured 17.9k and probably the tallest coils I’ve ever seen !!!
I’ll update with a review after I try it out.
Yeah. Wrong choice of words on my part. But it’s definitely taller than a Dimarzio Super D.It's probably oversized magnet, then, not
Damn. Wish I saw this earlier as it would have saved me $145. Nothing “exciting” about this pickup in my mahogany V. Fat as fuck and no clarity whatsoever. Not sure what happened on my pre-install reading…….showed 15.7k on cord tip to sleeve. Regardless it sounds like shit. Wiring in a BKP Miracle Man bridge and Cold Sweat neck as I speak. A set I’ve had for 2 years just sitting in a box.One thing to remember is this,
George uses maple body maple neck guitars
While I don't have the Full Shred, I do have the Custom 5 *and* the Screamin' Demon in the same guitar, an ESP Standard Horizon NT-II, in favor of the JB/'59 set it came orginally with. The Hunter is 15K-something Ceramic. Really different pickups, really. Like someone was saying, the Hunter is something like a slightly underwound Distortion with a smaller magnet. The Demon is someting like a SEVERELY underwound Custom 5 or Full Shred kinda deal.
Yeah, TBH, I've not spent much time with the 'Demon. Or the Hunter, for that matter. I was just going off the fact that both the Demon and the C5/FS use 43 gauge wire, I believe. And the Distortion and Hunter use 44.While I don't have the Full Shred, I do have the Custom 5 *and* the Screamin' Demon in the same guitar, an ESP Standard Horizon NT-II, in favor of the JB/'59 set it came orginally with.
I think, aside from being humbuckers, having Alnico 5 magnets and a slightly more balanced, if not subdued (not scooped!) mid-range, there are not really any further similarities.
The Custom 5 is quite big sounding, but tight. If you put one in a Les Paul, and throw some KT77's in an EL34 amp, you'll get some serious chest-thumping chunk. I mean...massive sounding like Iced Earth's rendition of Screaming for Vengeance at 0m15s.
I see it like an improved JB, without the screechiness it can have in some guitars. (FWIW, the JB ruled in one Korean Hamer Californian with a mahogany body and it also currently rules in my Kramer SM-1, but other guitars, not so much IMO).
The Screamin' Demon is -as a neck pickup at least- a decent medium output, quite bright and defined, quite on the single-coil side of things even for a humbucker, without being a totally thin mess.
Oh, both pickups do split well. But then again, so does the JB.

No worries. An hour ago I played my ESP again, focussing on differences and similarities again...The Custom 5 -while higher output than the 'Demon- has a lower output level than the JB. And split, the JB is a tad punchier too, but where the Custom 5's split tone works great, is when I play Queen's "Tie your mother down". That jangly intro-riff just asks for such a tone... or some Status Quo riffs like "Rain".Yeah, TBH, I've not spent much time with the 'Demon. Or the Hunter, for that matter.
