So I finally got around to trying the Seymour Duncan Custom SH-5. That's one I've always been curious about. I slapped it in my Hamer Korina Vector, and I have to say I'm really digging it in there. Duncan's description on the website is actually very accurate. This guitar has always been warm and mid range heavy, so the smiley face eq of the pickup works well with it. I found I have to keep the pickup backed up a bit because the low end, while still tight, can end up too prominent. Backed up and it lets the guitar open up a bit and has better pick attack. Will it stay forever in this guitar? Probably not since I'm always swapping stuff haha, but it's definitely a cool one.

Anyway, here's a quick tone test clip. Nothing flashy, just a BS riff through the EVH Stealth 100w red channel. It's just straight in with no post processing. First pass has drums followed by the solo'd guitars. Here's the chain:

Hamer Vector Korina w/SH-5
EVH 5150iii 100S (red channel)
Kerry Wright 4x12 w/Marshall G12 Vintages
SM57
UA Apollo w/1084 preamp sim (no eq)

So many genuinely amazing ‘boutique’ pickups to choose from that it is easy to overlook some truly incredible ‘shelf’ winds. The Duncan Custom is one of them. The Custom Custom (A-2) is another. I’ve swapped a rough cast Unoriented A5 in the Custom wind with excellent results. This clip sounds fantastic.

Thanks man. Yeah, I can nerd out on boutique pickups with the best of them, but I’m definitely not mad at this SH-5 lol. I also have a JB in one of my other guitars and it sounds killer in there.

As a VH fanatic, a friend recommended me to put an SH-5 in my Charvel SoCal years ago and I always scoffed at the idea. Finally I woke up and gave one a shot and I kick myself to this day not having one installed in a couple of guitars of mine. Such a versatile pickup. For the specific tone it puts out, the only pickups that come close or even surpass it arguably are the Bare Knuckle VHII and Suhr Aldrich. Absolute perfect blend of vintage and modern tones.

Always wanted to try that model too. Gary Holt and Jeff Waters used them I believe.

The SH-5 has been a recent favorite of mine too. Started using it in a baritone guitar and was skeptical that it'd be the right fit for that kind of tuning and scale length but it's been a revelation. Your tone in that clip sounds excellent, perfectly balanced.

Thanks man. I’ve only used it in D standard, but that’s cool it works well on the baritone scale and lower tunings.
