Joe's student list is so extensive it's hard to keep track of and Metallica changed music more than Van Halen, more people are aware of Metallica than Van Halen, Metallica is more of a household name than Van Halen will ever be. It's important stuff to remember.

Regardless, Ed would be proud of Joe and disappointed at the fanboys, over the years I loved Van Halen so I won't disrespect him by making strange claims in his name and on his defense.
