In celebration of my 100th article for the Jas Obrecht Music Archive, I thought I’d do something special, so I went back and re-transcribed my complete 1978 interviews with Eddie Van Halen. This first of these was done in July at the Day on the Green concert in Oakland, California. This was Van Halen’s first world tour and first appearance in northern California, and the band played like they were on fire. Afterward, Eddie and I shot some basketball, and then he asked me if I’d interview him. I happily agreed and turned on my tape recorder. This turned out to be Eddie’s first major interview, and mine too. This backstage conversation, which has never before been published in its entirety, is lively and insightful. Eddie covers how they got signed and recorded the first Van Halen album, and then goes way deep into his gear – his homemade guitars, as well as his effects, amps, songwriting, how the band works out parts, etc. Jon Sievert, who took some great photos that day of Eddie with the original black-and-white Strat, let me use his artwork on the post.

A few weeks later, Eddie and I spoke on the phone to clarify info from the Oakland interview. In this part, Eddie spoke about how he tricked out his guitars to stay in tune while using a whammy, why he loves P.A.F. pickups, his plans for the second album. Near the end, I asked him what the best part of being on the road was: “You know, the chicks, partyin’, and playin’. You just gotta take it in stride. You can’t get too bombed out at night, and then you feel shitty the next day.” Anyway, there’s a lot of classic Eddie here, so hope you enjoy it! cool stuff, I was just reading the original in the Roy Clark issue, that was right about the time I started subscribing to GP..seems like yesterday....

the whole reason I began reading and buying GP mag was your articles on EVH
it was like a treasure chest of secrets back then

as a kid I was so stoked to find out Kaimuki library on Oahu carried GP!

"Yah mom Im at the library doing homework...."
I think the first one I found there was Craig Chaquico on the cover

Schon with his Floyd Paul, Randy, Yngwie, EJ, Holdsworth...some of my faves!

Wow that's a killer interview, really enjoyed reading it, learned a lot :D

Awesome, awesome, awesome. Thanks for posting!
Would love to record with the loose spontaneity that Eddie speaks of. The last Recording session I did involved tedious double/triple tracking. The producer evem took to aligning every single thing: drums, bass, guitar to grid. Sounds tight, but takes the life out of it.
King Eddie rules!

man! that led me on a four hour reading trek! i readevery one of Jas's interviews about eddie, randy, etc. there were even some ones in there i never thought to check out that i just got done reading.

thanks for that link!

Awesome. Takes me back to being a kid and getting excited to see the new GP on the newstand. Those were the days!

And I use a phase shifter, a Phase 90 – MXR, I think. It doesn’t really phase; it just kind of gives you treble boost, which I like. Cuts through for solos

I always noticed that.. where the newer and reissue phasers just seem to add the swirl effect and cut the highs for me!

I second this statement!

Ha ha, I remember that Craig Chaquico article and being fascinated by his portable practice rig - MXR pedals strung together in a military ammo belt into some kind of headphone device - "sounds like you're playing in Winterland". This was all prior to the Rockman as I remember.

Anyone know WTF I'm talking about?

Yeah, I know what you're talking about. This was Craig in a GP cover story were did in the early 1980s, talking about his practice setup. He was using a Chiquita guitar with it, as I recall. And those Chiquitas, though tiny, had enormously powerful pickups. To stay in tune, you had to tune 'em up to where the high and low strings were G or A.

this morning before work i had all my gtr stuff in the living room and inspired by jas and this thread, kicked on the looper to set up the rhythm track, and this is what came out

not bad for 7:30am, pre-coffee, and no whammy bar (sacrilege i know!)

Jas Obrecht punches FACE!
