Some interestig stuff there...I have a UXL in my rig that may have been that very one according to Tony.....heh

I have an EG5 on the way so I guess we'll see.

I'm one of the few people that liked the Randall Ultra and thought the UltraXL was an improvement on it too...the Egnater UXL is pretty much the same thing only has the 'Egnater' shine on it.

(Largest complaint against the Ultra is lack of cut which is totally not a problem for a play at home guitarist like me :D )

I have a Randall Modern and that's a little more tricky to dial in but definately a good metal tone can be had, although I feel it's a bit of a one trick pony....shame I don't have an Egnater MHG to compare it too :D

Modules...gotta catch 'em all

EG5 can get real compressed if you turn the gain up high. Its got tons. Start with the gain at 10 oclock and go from there. Nice and saturated but not overly compressed.

Marco, most people say the EG5 is thick and cutting and listen to those clips in the Clips thread of the EG5. Sound familiar?

Anyway, with the MHG I was running the gain at noon to 3:00 for tones and that may be way too high since it has similar gain to the EG5. Compressed is right.

You like the COD? They are making a gained up version.

The EG5 clips didn't sound like the UXL to the best of my memory. I got the EG5 and I likey :D They are similar but the UXL had something in the mids I wasn't digging (although it killed on pinch harmonics as does the EG5). Probably nothing more than a different resistor value but I'd feel pretty stupid if the only difference is the magic marker writing on the label. So for the record "Basically the same" is valid but the subtle difference makes it for me. Maybe JKD can compare the two and see for sure.

I liked the COD but sold it to try the EG3/4. The B channel of the EG3/4 is my favorite for soloing out of all of them so far but I still haven't tried the EG5 with the band yet so that may change.
All I can say about the COD is it is the one module you should probably try first before you buy.

It is probably a minimal component (or 2) value difference between the UXL and EG5...they're definitely in the same gain range. The EG5 takes off gainwise where the upper regions of the EG4 finish.

Ch. B of the EG5 sounds a little more scooped than Ch A. to me..there's a perceived volume drop that sounds more than just compression and I think it's a slight drop in the mids...of course it could be a shift in the mid center to fatten up the sound???

I stand by my assessment that the mid center of the EG5 sounds different to the UXL.

The only caveat I'm going to add is that I didn't test them with identical pre-amp tubes.

The EG5 is a clean sounding high gain with the Sovtek 12ax7wa that were in it...I know that sounds odd, clean and high gain but unless you really push the front end (EMGs, high output PUs, really whacking the strings or boost) the EG3/4 and 5 are really quite smooth/clean to my ears...especially with the stock tubes.

If I get chance at the weekend I'll snap some snippets of my piss awful playing on my digicam with UXL and EG5 everything at noon (seems to be the most balanced way to hear the basic tone of a module)
