Here is a uber quick recording of a quick idea I was laying down w/ the Grendel Dead Room Iso Cab w/ a Warehouse Guitar Spears Veteran 30. My rig consisted of the M4 w/ EG5, Lexicon MPXG2 (Noise Gate was the only effect on), a VHT 2/90/2 w/ 6550 power tubes into the Grendel Dead Room Iso Cab. I used only a SM57 for mic'ing. I double tracked nearly everything. The only effect I have going in my DAW is a high-pass filter of 160hz to get rid of the rumble.

For those who wanted to hear WHS Veteran 30's, and the Grendel, its an AWESOME way to record. It's the only way I record guitar anymore. Babies and wives will love it ;). I had my VHT 2/90/2 cranked to a bit over halfway. It still has sound coming out of the iso cab, but gets rid of all the rumble in the room. Its uber quiet for how loud I was running the amp. I have no use for a THD hot plate or any other attenuator / speaker simulator w/ one of these!

Attached is the mp3. It was a quick 20-minute throw down of an idea I had. Whoever says the EG5 is only for 80's metal is dead wrong!!!

Another comment. For those who want a more aggressive tone, get a VHT 2/90/2, as it has a more agressive power section than the Mod50. The Mod50 is great for folks wanting a more buttery smooth power section, but for metal and harder rock, the VHT 2/90/2 w/ 6550's is friggin awesome.

I love the Mod50's power section too though :). It is BUTTA w/ the COD / SL / SL2, etc. I need both for the styles of music I do.

Dude!!

I thought that sounded awesome,
I haven't heard that brutal sound yet from my EG5 through the Mod50 +EG112...

Any experience with the AxeTrak or Randall ISO cabs?

BTW, thanks for sharing!

Thanks man! I have no experience w/ the AxeTrak, but I have had experience w/ the Randall ISO cab. I thought the randall sounded like you were playing in a box. Grendel made the first ISO cab that doesn't sound like you are playing in a box!

As far as your EG5 through your Mod50 / EG112, I have a Mod50 and an Egnater 112. I can "close" to that aggressiveness w/ changing the speaker to a G12T75, and removing the tone bra. I really don't like the CL80 as it sounds like a blanket is over the speaker. Secondly, I personally don't like the tone bra. It attenuated too much of the highs for my taste. I know how to mic a cab pretty well, and I found really no need for the tone bra. As for the cab, it friggin rips. Punchy, ballsy, and mid-rangy. Tone for days ;).

The Mod50's power section is a bit smoother than the VHT. I use the Mod50 for more classic rock / blues / clean stuff for recording, and leave the VHT for the meat, balls, and chunk. I personally think the VHT 2/90/2 is the ballsiest power amp I've ever played. But, I do know that it won't suit everyone. For me, it's perfect, especiaally w/ 6550's. I used KT88's for about 6 months when I got it, and threw in 6550s it later, and never went back. I used 6550's in my JCM 800's for years, and grew to miss them!

The aggressive nature really comes from the VHT in this clip. But I do love my Mod50 :).

Thanks Eric! I was just getting ready to put in my order for a Grendel Dead Room because of your response to my other thread, and this def seals the deal - awesome. I was going to just go with their (WHS's) Celestion CL80 clone (British Lead), but having heard your clip with the Veteran 30 (obviously a Celestion Vintage 30 clone), I am leaning that way now. I have a Black Shadow (Celestion) V30 in my Boogie Recto cab which is what I use with my M4 and VHT 2/50/2, so maybe the Veteran 30 would be the way to go to get closer to my existing sound.

The only problem your clip creates for me is that now I want a damn EG5!!!!!

LOL An EG5 is a must :). The build quality in the grendel is awesome man. It really works as advertised. It's tight to use two mic's, but w/ a Sennheiser 906 and SM57, I got two good mic placements with it. I'd really recommend the V30 over the CL80, as it cuts through the mix much better imho.

Enjoy :).

Good to know - I plan on using a Senn e609 and an SM57.

Just so you know, I only used the 57 in that recording though. I was too lazy to run another cable last night from the cab to my DAW ;).

Done deal - just placed my order with Grendel for a Dead Room with Veteran 30. Can't wait!! My wife and kids sleeping has been interfering with my creativity long enough.....time to stop the madness!!! :D

That's cool - that means that the sound will only get better! I find that I like the mid-range of the 57, but I like the low end of the 609 - the two together are awesome, IMO.

It's the exact reason I got one :). My wife already LOVES it ;).

Yep. The 906 is even better ;). I love that it has a 3-way switch for tone shaping. I'd recommend the 906 over the 609, as I have used both for recordings, and the 906 is better in every way :).

One thing I noticed towards the end of your clip is that the noise gate of your Lexicon works well :D

Good overall tone. I would probably position the mic slightly differently for my tastes but, it sounds like the way you tweaked your EG5 module is right up my alley (the right amount of mids and the gain wasn't dimed)

Do you think the Randall Isocab is worth getting if I can get one cheap (I can)? Does it really lower the volume a lot? I can deal with a little boxiness sounding by messing about with mic placement and maybe mixing with a speaker compensated output as well.

For me, I could never get past the boxiness. The grendel is quieter in my home and gives me a true mic'ed tone w/ no issues. I agree w/ the mic placement, it was a "quick test" mic test. I would get a bit more "cone action" and blend between the 906 for my true recorded tone. Given that a Grendel is like $330 w/o a speaker, I'd get the Grendel any day!

But I don't know your financial situation, so I'd say get one if its uber cheap. I wanted something that sounded at par with a cab mic'ed in a good room, which this gives me 100% of the way :).

On the Lexicon, the noise gate is my favorite feature of the Lexicon. It's simply amazing :). The other efx rock too though ;). I could not live w/o one!!! The settings on my EG5 were Gain - 2:30, Bass - 2:00, Mid - 10:00, Treble - 2:00.

I luv my EG5 :worship: :2thumbsup: :m17:

I have read some reviews that said the Randall box was not really very quiet, and that it sounded boxy. I listened to several demos of the AxeTrak (including their own "official" demos), and I didn't like it at all (if you like a Randall solid state sort of Dimebag Darrell sound then it may work for you - that's pretty much what the AxeTrak sounded like to me). The Dead Room is the first one I have heard that comes close to sounding like a free-air mic'd cab.
