So I feel like I have to post this... it's been bugging me.

I'm not trying to be a fanboy here. Just trying to be honest.

I feel like the Egnater Mod100 was not accurately represented in the high gain amp shootout.

Now, I say all this with the utmost respect for James, and everyone else involved. I know they were working at a breakneck pace, for days, well into the night, with 3 days of pre-preperation as well. And I'm eternally greatful for James, for making those clips, cuz they're a great resourse that no one else has had the time, money, or balls to do. So James - THANK YOU!!!!!!

For the past 2 weeks, I've been driving around in my car, listening to the clips of all the great amps, seeing which ones are my fav, and rocking out to his "Around the World in 30 Days" tune!

But I just feel bad, that perhaps with maybe 1-2 more minutes of knob tweaking, the MOD100 could have sounded better. I feel like the overall volume levels were low, perhaps the bass-boost was too low or high, EQ was set too flat, presence or depth was too high or low. I dunno. I think it would have been better just picking ONE module, too, and going with that.

I do feel like the sounds of the MOD100 do get progressively better as the clip goes on. Maybe settings were tweaked a bit more, and fixed.

All I know is that my MOD50 sonds WAY better than what that MOD100 sounded like in the clip. I feel like it was just some bum settings in the spur of the moment.

I agree Nick,as I have both and my Mod 50 sounds great, but the 100 just has something else more :D It definitely lacked some richness in the shootout and the GnR should have been there too!Just me $.02

They had the mids scooped on the EG5 all the way. At least those were the settings when the camera was rolling. I wouldn't worry about it Nick. There will be enough Egnater fanboys at this Sweetwater thing to give the mod series a proper plug.

Nick, I also agree.

For the record, I also thank James Lugo for being a heck of a guy and that the shootout was an excellent service for the gear community.

I can totally understand how some amps did not get a 100% true sonic representation with the frantic pace of the day and the fact that the folks were probably not as familiar with settings on the MOD 100 as with the Marshalls, etc.

I really liked a lot of the amps ('71 Super Trem, Bogner 20th, etc.) they played through, but
none of them got me second-guessing my Egnater.

Nick,

Where did you find the clips? I'd like to listen to them. Thanks.

I haven't listened to the clips, but I'll check them out in a bit. You say the JCM2000 sounds awful? In the clips? or general?

The main thread is stickied in the main RT forum section.

Lots of great, great sounding amps in there.

(Except for the JCM2000. That thing sounded noticeably AWFUL next to everything else, to my ears.)

Thanks Nick - I did listen to a few of them, and you're right, my MOD 100 is way more "in your face" than their demo. I listened to the Bogner XTC for comparison and I wasn't blown away either. I'll review them all soon. Very cool of them to do this though.

Hey Nick, did you just download all the tracks? This is my first time using Soundclick. I just signed up. I added all the tracks to "my soundclick" and I'm trying to figure out if I can play them all in order as a playlist... Any tips...?

This thread came at the right time. I'm curious about other higher=gain amp sounds. My band is really taking off and I'm busy, busy. I've been doing rehearsals with using 2 amps. My Lonestar for the cleans and a Rebel 20 over a TM212 for the dirt. I gave up on using the Lonestar for any higher-gain sounds. It shines, but only for cleans and overdrive, not for high-gain. I can get decent distortion with an OCD in front, but I still prefer the sound of the Rebel. So, for now I'll be using 2 amps.

But I want to learn from this shootout... I might get something else in the future. I'm still thinking "Renegade" or "Mod50" but I can't do it right now. With the band taking off, I have to direct the funds to other things like mics, bass amp, PA speakers, cases...etc etc.

Ok first off when we did it we all loved the amp in the room. Dans and james guitars were the sl2 so everything from the start of Dans guitars was the sl2. The setting were about this. ch b gain at around 1 o'clock, bass at about 3 o'clock, mids at about 12 to 1 oclock and treb around 1 o'clock with the master at 12 o'clock. The presence was at about 1 o'clock and the depth was a just on a little maybe 9 o'clock. Vol was pretty loud. No amp in the shootout had any more time then any other for settings and since I brought a lot of them I new what good starting points were. There you have it.

Thanks Dave - I just listened to the MOD 100 again and it does sound very good. I guess I'm just spoiled by being in the same room with it! Like you said, it sounds better when you're near it.

This is a great resource for tone chasers. Great job guys!

OK so I went back and listened on my computer. Opened up the file in Quicktime, so I could fast forward from part to part.

The tone definitely gets better as the clip goes on. The opening SL2 few seconds just sounds kinda funky. The solo SL2 stuff towards the middle and end sounds way, WAY better! Like what I'm used to.

It's harder to listen back to back in the car...

If you listen to the E-RECT clip compared to the real Dual Recto, it's DAMN close...

I had a chance to hear a Mod 100 next to a Mod 50 and couldn't hea r abig difference. Certainly not enough to justify the weight! LOL! I wonder if anyone hears anything next to the RM100. :D

I run everything on my MOD100 about the same except the bass is about 11 o'clock.

Thanks to Dave and James for taking the time to do such a fantastic job of posting some GREAT Amp tones!

I've heard people say that the Randall stuff is more aggressive then the Egnater stuff. But they also say that the Egnater stuff sounds more refined. I wonder if the RM100 is as heavy as the MOD 100.

Are there other heads out there that weigh 65 pounds? My MOD 100 is the heaviest piece of gear I've got except for my PA subs. Why is it so much more heavier than my 100 watt Marshall was?

I sacrifice because of it's versatility and the fact that it sounds better than anything else I've ever owned.

I think a lot of the weight is due to the weight and quality of the tranny. I don't find I sacrifice any with the Mod 50 and it is only 50 lbs, plus my large 212 is only 37 lbs! Loving it! With the E2, I'll have my dream rig.

You just have to play both in the same room, same guitar, same settings, same tubes and you will feel the difference, guarantee :D

The MOD 100 in the shootout and the clip is my amp which was in LA with Dave F being built into a rig. That MOD100 head sounds crazy good in the room, not sure how dialed in it was but I can tell you in direct comparison to Mesa, Marshall, Cameron, Bogner, Soldano etc...It just killed and was versatile. Also I had it and 2 Mod 50's in the same room comparing them with the same thought that if the MOD50 sounded the same I would keep it as it was lighter and easier to move around. There was a huge difference between the 50 and the 100 to my ear. The MOD100 was much bigger sounding and has much more of everything to my ears thats why I kept it. That said I have no trouble saying when something sucks as well and I dont get emotionally attached to any of this stuff so for me to keep it for well over a few years it has to be really really good.

YMMV.

What module is used in the first "song" is it the E-rect continued from the soundclip before?

Which module is used in "around the world in 30 days"? I think it fits really nice in the mix...
