Funny, I really thought doing the 'X' mod would thin out the tone....but in reality, I just think it cuts in a band better....which is a good thing. I am the only guitarist in our group, but everything helps. I like my low mids, but I still hear some good low mids in your tone.
Why would the X mod thin things out? It's boosting upper mids....to make it thicker. It really has great tight low mids..and great thick syrupy upper mids. It's always what I wanted the EG34 to sound like from the beginning. It just LOVES Scumback M755s too
Eric
I guess I find low mid heavy tones to be some of the thickest and syrupy. I don't hear it as boosting upper mids but more shifting from low mids to upper mids. However, the EG3/4 is sweet.
Nick,
I like the SL2X more and more but I won't know more till I get it with the band. At home it seemed to thin the tone a little due to the added presence and since it is not as low mid heavy as stock.
"The "X" mod involves two parts: high-mids added for presence, and bass cut for tightness."
I agree, I really don't hear thicker mids or upper mids, just more presence....or as Bruce says....the X makes it brighter.
I think the stock bass of the EG3/4 is fine. I am trying the upper mid thing and my tube board has a 500pf cap.
Wonder how a Silver Mica would sound rather than the ceramic cap. I'll have to ask Jeff. What are your thoughts on that nick?
I had the X Mod done to my Bassman but in the end, that is me clean module so it is back to stock.
