Thanks Eric, I'll check it out again. Funny, I really thought doing the 'X' mod would thin out the tone....but in reality, I just think it cuts in a band better....which is a good thing. I am the only guitarist in our group, but everything helps. I like my low mids, but I still hear some good low mids in your tone.

Why would the X mod thin things out? It's boosting upper mids....to make it thicker. It really has great tight low mids..and great thick syrupy upper mids. It's always what I wanted the EG34 to sound like from the beginning. It just LOVES Scumback M755s too :)

Eric

I guess I find low mid heavy tones to be some of the thickest and syrupy. I don't hear it as boosting upper mids but more shifting from low mids to upper mids. However, the EG3/4 is sweet.

Nick,

I like the SL2X more and more but I won't know more till I get it with the band. At home it seemed to thin the tone a little due to the added presence and since it is not as low mid heavy as stock.

"The "X" mod involves two parts: high-mids added for presence, and bass cut for tightness."

I agree, I really don't hear thicker mids or upper mids, just more presence....or as Bruce says....the X makes it brighter.

I think the stock bass of the EG3/4 is fine. I am trying the upper mid thing and my tube board has a 500pf cap.
Wonder how a Silver Mica would sound rather than the ceramic cap. I'll have to ask Jeff. What are your thoughts on that nick?

I had the X Mod done to my Bassman but in the end, that is me clean module so it is back to stock.

Sorry man, haven't been here for a while. Love the DLX & EG5.
Great job!
Seems like I missed a lot.

It's hard to hear what you are saying so I am just guessing where the EG3/4 comes in.

I have the EG3/4X now at home and it sounds good but to me it sounds mostly like more presence. The stock module sounds better when playing alone to my ears. I am sure the bigger difference is with a band as it might sit in the mix better.

It's not just presence....having more upper mids really changes some of the feel of the module and bite. To get this kind of bite w/ it stock, I'd need to run the bright on 1 or 2...and run the treble up higher. Definitely has more upper mid grind than the stock EG34. But still retains that smoothness. Is the treble bleed cap at 100pF? If not...I'd move it to that. Really opens up the module.

Eric

Eric, my treble bleed cap is at 500pf but still the module sounds too bright to my ears now. I think I might prefer the stock version. It still cuts in the band. I'd like to try the 100pF cap but that tube board cap is a pain to work on and the last time I made that change part of the circuit board started to peel off at that location so I never touched it since! LOL.

I think what bothers me now is I find it sounds too close to my SL2X, where before they were much more different.

It does sound more similar to a SL2x...but the EG34x has a LOT MORE low mids than the SL2x imho. The EG34X has an even more aggressive low mids that I just plain love!!! :)

Different strokes for different folks though. I don't own a SL2X anymore ;) The EG34X is my marshall tone....that and the hilly modded XTC. Those two modules with the EG5 also..I can get all sorts of Marshall tones!!!

Now the wait continues for the Mystery Module! :)

Maybe my Mod100 when it gets fixed will come shipped with a dual channel mystery module!!! Now that'd be a f-in treat!!! :)

I hear ya Eric......I need to hear the EG3/4 with the band. Only difference is I have the 500pF tube board cap. Not as open and bright as your EG I guess. Sounds killer though. I'll see if leads are still thick with the band mix. I also still love the SL2 and SL2X because I find it a different flavor than the EG3/4. Less lower mids and more JCM800-ish to my ears. I am pretty happy now. :) I am also liking my Erect a lot.

The cool thing about the modules is YOU DON't have to dial everything to sound the same!I like mine to sound different :D blah, blah blah   it's early :D
