Loved the tone of the EL34BSTR better than any other EL34 I tried, but the tubes didn't last very long. So my vote goes for the SED.

another vote for SED winged Cs; I'm starting to see a trend with this survey :)

Chinese.

Svets are fine for pretty bright amps IMO, so smooth - too smooth in my Diezels.

I cant really vote in the poll because I have yet to do a serious A/B with Svets vs. Ruby in my amp.....but I can tell you that I am completely happy with the Svets in my VH4 right now :)

Peter,
I would love to offer my opinion, but alas, the tubes in my Einstein are running perfectly and are the original tubes you sent in the amp.
I should say that I have no complaints about any tubes so far.

Definitely the RUBY's for me.. As Olaf pointed out> Smooth + Smooth = Too Smooth

The Shuguang have more midrange, that´s
smooth in my opinion

You are tweaking your amps way too loud lately Peter :D

Hi!
I like the SED´s a bit more, as I like it more "between the eyes" (balls)! :D

To me the STR´s are the smoother sounding tubes, and the SED´s got more "growl" in the tone! I like that growl, and miss that a little bit with the STR´s!

      (that´s for you Peter, the revenge!)

cheers, "ACY"

I haven't tried the Chinese tubes. Love the sound of the SEDs though, really punchy.

I'm not voting as this isn't a valid comparison of any description!

winged C's all the way .
more prescence and punch - makes the STR's sound muddy in comparison .

How did you test them? Pulling out the tubes then rebias..or did you hear two different amps that had the tubes in each?

In my experience sometimes the memory can add a bit as well..
EDIT: I don't find Ruby BSTR's muddy in the least

Hey!
I do not think that this thread should be a SED versus STR thread. When one musician thinks the STR are muddy, so it has a lot to do with his own setup, music style, preferences, ....................................!

So that´s all very subjective and depends on personal taste.

When played with same bias (arround 38mA - I love it hot!) the STR´s are louder than the SED´s. And the STR´s got a wider fatter sounding bass. On the other hand the SED´s bass is more tight, and that means also more punchy on higher volume settings. To me the SED´s sound more aggressive, they got that british bite in their sound. The STR´s are smoother, and not that aggressive. In my store I use SED´s and STR´s mainly, and I do not really like JJ´s, or EH tubes. These are like warm beer to me (I live in bavaria!!!!!!!!!) and as we say in germany: "no fish and no steak!"

The STR´s had some problems in the past, but as Peter said there is a better version avaiable now. That´s great news, as these two tubes, the SED´s and the STR´s are both very good sounding tubes.

Just had the chance to check out some NOS Mullard EL34, and I think I would stay on the SED´s. The Mullard´s been not bad, very fat bass, but the price ...................! NOS Mullards are really expensive!

nice day, "ACY"

Hi ACY,

I totally agree with Your ears. It depends also on
the amp.
The VH4 sounds more muddy with the SED´s,
the Einstein und Herbert will become brighter
and tight.

Btw 38 milliamps is not very hot in the Diezels and
causes a plate disapation of 65%. You can go up
to 50 milliamps.

See You next week,

Dieter Brezel :D

Hi Peter!
It´s 38mA per tube, not pair! ;-) (cathode)

With a Plate voltage of 475+ that would still be around 70% of max dissapation
