Yesterday i was in my little tuning room and testing the James Hetfield Pickups.
The first impression is good.I dig them.To me they sound a lot different then the regular 81/60 combo. They are LOUD!!!!
Not so sterile, more percussive. The clean tone on the neck pickups is awesome.
But i need a little more time to dial the right sound. You have to tweak a little on the ampsettings.
And they look awesome.
How do you guys like them so far if you have them?
Oh, by the way my Amp has 6L6.I need to try them with an amp that has EL34.

I dig them too. And yes, they are loud. Much more output than the EMG 81-x (which I had before that), that's how I perceive it. Dunno whether it does have more output, but I did dial back the gain on my Mark V. I am still tweaking my amp (oh god, when will it stop...) but I can already say that these are fuller sounding than the regular 81. A really good EMG pickup and certainly not only for Metallica fanboys.

@Metaladdict : I see you have a Truckster, I have myself an Eclipse, is the installation easy ? I'm even worse with tools than with a guitar :aww:

Nice pickups, i been using them for a couple months and love them, over the weekend i played a show and they sounded great live.

Just plug and play man.Very easy.Because of the solderless system that EMG offers with the pickups it is very easy.

@ Laurens: How long do you have them now?

Two weeks, my wife brought them back from NY. They are hard to get here. I think Thomann start delivering now. How did u get them?

I got mine from Music Store in Cologne.
They are expensive compared to the US prices.

OK, thanks.

So he pots are long enough to go thru the carved top ?

Just bought my second set,I like them alot. When JH described them I was a little scared, but now I know what he meant by sounding passive. And you still have that clear open E chug without it getting muddy.
I must admit I like them better in my Explorer, since it's alder and not mahogany.

Absolutely LOVE my Hetset!!!! EMGs but better. So clear and articulate yet massive.

how's the clean with these pickups? I tried the EMG 60 and didn't do much for me honestly. will this be better?

@ Reiep: you don´t need to changed the pots if you had EMG in the guitar before.
@ Joeytpg: I loved the EMG 60 for clean stuff.THE JH Neck is much more cleaner wether you play single notes or chords and combined with a little bit of chorus you really get the magic.
In the distortion mode the Neck pickups is really fat but not to much.It is really really cool.

The pickups are wide, they have a lot of range,They have bite and are smooth at the same time. You can also play with the Volume which is great.

jh clean is better the 60, its warmer sounding to my ears and seems kinda like a passive mixed with active pu, its also fuller sounding.

Dammit. I just bought an 81 bridge, and HA for the neck of my guitar. I was debating between these and the hetset for about 2-3 weeks before purchasing. Im really happy with my decision, but Im still REALLY curious about the hetset. I think the HA is a hidden gem from EMG that no one really talks about. That pickup is amazing.

I have a Les Paul and an Explorer. If I were to stick the JH set in one, which would it be?

The Exploraaaaah, yea-aaaahh ! Oooooohhhhh heh heh !

EMG has the absolute worse quality control of there electronics. Like there pickups but its a crap shoot well not even it's just about a sure loss when it comes to purchasing there electronics.
