I have to admit I never gave EMinence much thought.

Recnetly we were at a studio that only used Eminence Patriot and Red Coat speakers in their cabs and I was blown away. Some of the best sounding speakers I have ever played through. VERY rich, smooth and warm. Most were about a year old and the owner of the studio said they were pretty warm and smooth from day one. He said that is a big reason he uses Eminence...they sound like older broken in, sweet sounding speakers almost from day one. Listen to clips on Youtube where they compare EMinence to Celestion for example and you can hear this. May not be for everyone, but I like how they voice their speakers.

I agree. I recently tried a Private Jack (their Greenback) and a Tonespotter (their G12-65) combination in my 212 and was very impressed. Think I'm going to replace my WGS vet30/ET65 combo with them.

WOW, a built in attenuator! Is it just two speakers? When are they available?
I wonder if it is the same type of thing with the neos....where they were stiff and cold sounidng.

On the mix....the Private Jack/Tone Spotter sounds like a good one.
Resonant, how is the low end on these? Are they versatile and good for various styles from classic rock to hard rock, blues, etc? Tight? How about compared to the stock Elite 80s.
Isn't it cool how they feel/sound more broken in than most....right from the start! The E-80s were really stiff when new. Still are as they are still new, LOL.

Also good is the Tonker/Swamp Thang. Also the CRex/Governor.

Oddly enough, even though many Eminence speakers have a high db level.....they feel more forgiving than I expected.

Did you ever determine the speakers (emi's) in that Crate cab you played through a few weeks back??

Richie,

I decided to try the Private Jack/Tonespotter combo because I thought the low end and high end of the Tonespotter would complement the meaty mids of the Private Jack...and it does. I read a lot of people mixing Greenbacks with G12H30s (like the infamous Scumback H75/M75 combo...), and hadn't heard of mixing GBs with G12-65s, but nevertheless I gave it a try, and so far I'm really loving it.

Also, the Private Jack is 101dB and the Tonespotter is 100.7dB, so they match up pretty nicely as far as relative volume goes. Their G12H30 (the Wizard) is 103dB, so I was afraid it might have dominated the Private Jack a little bit more than the Tonespotter does.

Still would like to try some Scummies someday, but the Eminence were only $80 each brand new, shipped to my door...hard to beat that!

How versatile? Do they seem to need a lot of time to break in like some Celestions?

Did you give the Elite 80s a chance to break in? I know they warm up a lot after break in....as with all speakers. They are very balanced and smooth, but I might be getting some old Celestions from a friend.

Emminence recommended the Cannibus Rex/Governor mix to me. Also the Tonker/Swamp Thang

i saw that variable attenuation speaker at namm.

it sounded pretty good. but hard for me to categorize which speaker that it sounds closest to.

that being said i think i am going to load a cab with lynch super v's!

I might just stay away from anything new and keep going with what is working for me....old Celestions that are well played in. :D

Well man...having played Jason's 4x12 w/ Eminences...they were pretty good sounding that's for sure!!! I've always found Eminences, even broken in ones, to a bit on the stiff and sterile side for me personally. Jason's cabs really did sound good though. Having said that, 4 65W Scumback M75s are a hard combo to beat in a 4x12...and the M75 / H75 combo in a 2x12 is legen...wait for it...dary!! :) Those 2 cabs I could have forever, and be 100% satisfied. They have 100% cured my speaker GAS. In the end...I will have a 1x12 w/ 100W M75, and a 2x12 / 4x12 with the aforementioned config. Definitely the right way to go for me personally.

Yes Brother Eric - you are preaching to the choir - I am a believer in the Scummies  - I just needed to resolve my cabinet issues, and now my modular GAS and then I will probably be able to free up some cash for the Scummies.

I ended up getting a Genz Benz 212 to stack with my TM212, and it came loaded with Private Jacks. I liked them better than the WGS I had in my TM212, and for $160/pair, I decided to "temporarily" put Eminences in my TM212 as well. It's working for now..

....Eventually I will get 4 Scummies and load both 212s with them......

BUT first - I have to pay for the RT2/50 you just sold me!!!

I'd rather just buy old Celestions.
As I posted on the TGP in response to your post...since my speakers are based on the old pre rola Celestion Greenback G12M and G12H30 tones (M75 & H75 respectively), you'll spend upwards of $350 - 500 or more on old Celestions replicating the Scumback tone.

H75 and M75 side by side in this one:

Billy Yates/Strat/H75's first, then Jeff Jourard/Strat w/humbucker and M75's second.

And just so you know, Yates/Jourard clip was done with NEW speakers.

I stood by Jim at the Steve Stevens show...the tone was....legen...wait for it...DARY! :)

Jim and I had a good vantage point...thankfully since we were tall. We both were on Pete Thorns side of the stage though.

I have the funny feeling I'll be seeing Steve play again, so I stood on Pete's side to see how the PC 4x12 cab fared against my cab. Pretty sure you could hear Steve anywhere, and Pete...well...he should have been louder, so that's why I stayed on his side of the stage. ;)

Frankly I forgot you were there, Eric...between getting my wife cocktails and listening...sorry. I kinda tune people out when the music starts...especially tunes/tones like that. :D

I don't blame you on standing on Pete's side .... closer to the beer!!! :) I don't blame you man. I agree Pete's rig could have been a bit louder...but that's okay. I thought they both sounded awesome. To derail the thread a bit...what's your opinion of the PC 4x12 vs. a standard well-built Marshall style cab? I've never been a fan of ports in a guitar cab....especially a 2x12 or 4x12. Care to compare / contrast?

Eric

Scummies are pre-aged? How will they sound when they really break in? :D

I think I found my speaker with the G12K-100. Amazing!

They are slightly pre-aged and slightly broken in. Having said that, they sound awesome right out of the box, and get even better when they break in. WTF is your issue w/ doing a little bit of the work and aging your own speakers BY PLAYING!!!! C'mon man...it's not THAT hard to break in a speaker by playing it!

Well...you've switched from the CL80 to G12K100 to the G12-65 to etc. as "your speaker" lately. Which is it? ;)

Here's the Speaker Break-in from Jim's FAQ --> http://scumbackspeakers.com/faqs.html

--------------

Speaker Break-In Timeframe

If you are thinking that you're in tonal bliss right now, wait a bit, you'll be more surprised in 20-50 hours of break in time. All Scumbacks are pre-aged, and slightly broken in when they're manufactured. Each Scumback speaker takes five days to build, and it's not just slapping the cone in a frame, centering it and shipping it out, either. Scumback cones are aged to sound 25 years old, and many have reported that they sound identical to Pre Rola G12M and G12H's from the 60's after minimal break in time. Just to be clear on that, though, I've asked several of my clients to report what they experienced. So here's their comments boiled down to "how many hours?" for break in time...

"25 & 30 watt speakers generally sound their fullest and most articulate after 20-25 hours of break in. The louder you play them, the faster they break in by the way, because it moves the voice coil/cone more. Reports indicate they get more defined, more mids, rounder bass response and louder."

"65 watt (HP model) speakers generally take about twice as long, so figure 40-50 hours before they realize their best tone, with the same attributes as the lower wattage models."

"100 watt (XHP) models sound the same as the 65 watt versions, but they need 60 hours to fully break in due to their higher temperature voice coils."

Many have asked me the differences between the lower wattage, 65 watt HP, and 100 watt XHP speakers. The larger voice coil exhibits a tiny bit more bass response & a bit less treble response. That's if you're really listening and recording and comparing tones. In my tests, moving your bass control from 7 to 5 or 6 usually takes care of the difference between the low power and either the 65 or 100 watt versions. The treble might need to be moved from 6 to 7 to make up the difference. They all sound fantastic so order the speaker power handling you need to handle the ouput wattage of your amp where you play it, and wail on them. That's what they're made for, after all!

Eric, it IS a pain in the ASS when you live in a condo and have to play at low volume and you also have health problems that limit the amount of time you can play each day. That is why if you must know. Sorry to be blunt. When we have a house and a basement....that will not be an issue! ;)

I get the volume past 8:30 and the neighbors start calling.

Don't worry.......Scums are on my list.....just not yet.

Truth is Eric......I think the trick is finding speakers that work well in 212 cabs and so far my favorites are the 80s and the 100s.
