Ok. So the Engl AE came in yesterday. Holy uncompressed nowhere to hide batman!!! After owning a 2005 Splawn QuickRod for years and laughing when people said they were hard to play... I get that reference now. This thing is seriously challenging for me to play. I'm running it though an attenuator in this clip so that my wife doesn't come unglued on me right now...lol! But I do have the masters around 10:00. I find that this amp goes from very dark to tear your head off shrill in a hurry.

For those that are going to ask... the Savage is WAY more compressed than the AE. It is also a bit easier to get dialed in. I'm gonna mull this one over for a few days... but I have a feeling that this one is going back.

Anyway... try not to laugh too hard at my playing...haha!

My Savage 120 MK II for reference:

So That's harder than the Splawn? That's nuts....I had 4 splawns(as ya know probably), and you had to be pretty precise in your chops. My EVH I have now is less effort, that's for sure. The tones I'm hearing sound good...but if it's a struggle, I can see why you'd might return it.

I definitely find the AE more difficult to play than my Splawn. It definitely could use a boost. I’m just not a fan of boosting amps to get my rhythm tones. But I now have mad respect for guys who rock these and the Blackmore.

Sounds great to me, but it is a tone I could see being a little tight on the feel

I have the AE 100; I run it into a pair of Engl E212VHB PRO cabs with V30s.

Gets me the mid-late 70s hard rock rhythm tones I want.

More like Destroyer and beyond; though I'm mostly going for Paul's early '80s sounds, from Creatures of the Night through Asylum. Paul's rhythm tones on the Lick It Up album are some of my favs.

I can also get the earlier pre-Destroyer tones too.

I was eyeballing an Artist Edition GC had for about 12-1300 if I remember right ..... I've never played any Engls except the Synergy Modules .... the Modules didn't take my breath away .... but I've caught some vids on some big boys that sounded great !
I think the built in Noise Gate made me say no ...... I'm not big on built in effects of any kind in a amp .

I've always liked Engl. and Marshall. The AE 100 has elements of both. You don't have to use the noise gate, I really don't need it unless I really push into high gain, I think it works great.

Years ago (10+?) when I was looking for my "be all, end all" high gain rig, I went with Engl: E530 Tube Preamp, E850/100 Tube Power Amp, and the pair of Engl E212VHB PRO cabs that I'm currently using with the AE:

Sounds really good and makes me consider the Savage MKII again...
How would you consider the Crunch channel on lo and hi gain modes?

I found the SE EL34's just a little off for what I hoped. My Invader's CH2 does a great smooth (maybe a tad too smooth) Marshall-esque tone.

the way I get my tone on all my amps people always say my tone is hard to play . I dig in hard so I do less gain

I would honestly compare the AE's high gain channel to Channel 3 on the Savage. I feel the exact same way about both channels. I'd like more gain on tap. lol. The AE to me would be perfect if I wanted a more modern AC/DC type of tone. It is extremely open. For me, uncomfortably so. I give mad props to guys who really can rock this thing and make it sing. Unfortunately, I'm not one of those guys. If I were to keep the amp, I would need to boost the shit out of it to give it some squish. And I just don't like boosting for rhythm tones. I think it sounds really good on play back. But playing it is not a joyful experience for me.

I have a love/hate relationship with the Savage. Some days I fire it up and just smile. Some days I want to set it on fire...lol! I'm gonna put it up for sale for no other reason than it is more amplifier than I really need.

Def can tell the difference in feel from those two clips. Good job. Burn.
Yeah you can literally hear the tightness difference. The AE needs a boost badly.

I boost my 101b for a rhythm tone and click on a delay in the effects loop for solos. I don’t mind having a boost always on but that’s just me.

If that is truly Aldrich’s signature amp it’s no wonder he doesn’t play it at all. His playing and mod to Marshalls are super fluid and easy feeling. There’s no fighting at all.

try a headfirst cali or some sort of jose diodes if you want that liquid feel under your fingers...

If you stick with Engl’s, you might wanna try the Inferno or SE EL34. They’re a lot easier to play, although for the stuff played in your clips I’d just get if it were me a good vintage modded or boosted Marshall or Naylor
