different in what way? i have one that looks nearly mint, but has the light bulbs (which are faded now). i'm thinking of attempting to replace them with LEDs though. do you think the LEDs affect the tone, or just the noise level?

It could be the tubes most likely. I remember hearing on Lord Riffenstein's forum that engl started using Sino brand tubes in a Savage 120 thread.

There is one major change: Different tubes

In the 90s the Savage was loaded with JJ's ECC83 in V1 to V6. The "new Savage" is loaded with China 12AX7 (Sino, TT...) in V1, V2, V3, V5 and V6 (sometimes a JJ in V6). Only one JJ in V4 for clean/crunsh1.
It's sounds extremly different to the old JJ stock tubes. I changed the tubes a few weeks ago and you can see my results
here.
And even a selected JJ produce more noise than a selected China.

my preamp tubes are Engl-labeled, and i haven't seen any other labeling on them as to what maker they're from...how do you tell?

also, any power tube recommendations?

i'm all about clarity, tightness, punch, and balls, and i generally play a cross between US and Euro styles of power metal with some death metal influence as well, if that helps you make better suggestions.

Well, before the SE sells (assuming it does), I have the SE, my 5150, my Angelus, the KL, and my Martin. The SE cash will turn into another 5150, and the EC CUstom I posted. Then I'll order a Custom order ESP, and start the waiting process. I've always had a LP/EC shape in one form or another, and I've missed not having one recently. Those EC Customs are bad ass playing guitars, easily the best feeling, playing and sounding ESP that they produce. I had one before and foolishly sold it to pay a bill, and I completely regret it. Time to rectify the mistake.

Guitars that don't have a Floyd are starting to turn me off actually. I just love the tuning stability and I'm so used to them. You ever played a Vigier? I got one a few weeks ago and it fucking rules.

Might not look like it, but it sounds crushing in B tuning.

I'm not sure how to tell. I'll have to ask the guy on riffenstein's forum that posted that article. As far as powertubes, a lot of people swear by the NOS GE 6550s. I just have stock tubes in it right now.

i've got GE 6550s, look to be NOS to me (ans, can you clarify?). i'll have to do some more research on preamp tubes too.....i wonder what a NOS RFT would do combined with some of the stuff recommended in that thread?

My other guitar player uses my other 5150, so I don't wanna jack his sound, and I'd rather have my own unique 5150 sound anyways.


I also want to get an older, 2 channel dual rec, but only if it's one of the chrome chassis, black faceplate ones. So I shall be on the search.
