Hey Guys,

I'm new here and I'm having a huge dilemma about what amp I should buy. I really don't know what I would like better, the ENGL SE (or Invader) or a DIEZEL. Have any of you guys owned or played both? Could you give some type of comparison? One thing thats really important to be is how it sounds at low bedroom level.

Thanks so much for your help,

Eric

Check out the "videos" sticky. I have a speaking volume clip of the Herbert in there. Never played the ENGLs, but the Diezel's master volume is truly an engineering marvel

Welcome to the forum!

Since you posted this in HCAF too I am assuming you are a metal player. If you are looking for a metal amp at bedroom volumes the best I have found so far for my taste is a ENGL E570 preamp into a VHT 2/50/2.

But in regards to Amp heads, a Diezel Herbert does really well at lower volumes, just put the Master up a bit, and control volume with the preamp volume. :)

There is really no better, just personal preference. :D But a Herbert has way less toggles and switches and crap. Both very versatile imo.

i think that Engls are the best low volume metal amp you can buy. where most tube amps "fill out" at higher volumes, the Engl is what it is at any volume; it kinda stays flat rather than expand (if that makes any sense) as it gets louder. a Diezel will crush it at gig or practice volume, cuz the harder you push it the bigger and badder it becomes with overtones and creamy distortion. the Engl sounds pretty good at any volume; a Diezel is not bad at all at low volumes and devastating at high volumes. that's my two cents. i've owned both and the Diezel won hands down; why not get a 50 watt Einstein? less volume, less headroom...

Definitely the HERBERTO!
I use it my apartment and I have had no complaints.
Well...

your not supposed to mention engls around here, too much hate

i personally like both, i currently have a engl se and a herbert and i have a einstein on the way.
for rock tones i like the diezel but for metal i like the engls.

I tested the Invader next to the Herbert that I eventually bought, at all sorts of volumes (bedroom level is important to me too), and the Herbert won in my book at every volume, but you need to go and a/b them, because they do sound very different.

I own both an ENGL Blackmore head and the Diezel Herbert, I would say they are both equally "true to their own character" at the same volume levels, which to me means you have to get close to 'loud conversation' to make them sound really good.
If you had to turn them all the way down the ENGL would sound better, but I wouldn't like either of them then because in my opinion a tube amp has to move at least SOME air to sound good. (dynamics)
Good alternatives would be the Einstein, and ENGL Fireball (known to sound better at low-medium rather than very high levels). The ENGL Screamer combo could also be a good alternative.

If you are really worried/restricted about volume levels, then I suggest you get a solid state combo rather than a tube amp.
Or maybe one of those Z.Vex 1 watt preamps ;) The best bet is always to try as many as you can, and with your own guitar/setup or to use a similar guitar if you're in a store and don't have your own along for the testride.

good luck! - Rune.

I have owned several ENGLs...Nice amplifiers (with the exception of the Powerball, which I absolutely hated). In my opinion thaey do not stand up to the Diezel products in any catagory...including build quality. In terms of "bedroom" volume levels...stick with the Herbert, Just my opinion.

I hope this thread will be positive for both companies !!!

From what I owned and compared due to GAS IMO of course :D :

VH4S>VH4>ENGL SE EL34 Version>Herbert>Powerball IMO so don;t flame me

It seems we should mod Your Herbert a bit to get it
on higher place in the row

:D :D :D

Thanks Peter, but I sold her for another VH4

Hey man! I don't know, it probably really depends on your taste, as always.

I currently own an ENGL Savage 120, which has been my main (gigging) amp for the last 5-6 or so years and a Diezel VH4 which I've only gotten about a half year ago. Both absolutely rock, no doubt. The VH4 has been my "dream amp" ever since I first played it and I love it even more now that I own it! But I really also have to say the Savage has never disappointed me either. I play hardcore and death metal and for that, both amps are great (other things as well, of course).

I do think the VH4 is more "musical" in a way with great mids and awesome punch, but the Savage has a sound of its own which is well suited for this kind of music. You gotta try 'em I guess... both are kick-ass amps, each with their own signature sound.

At bedroom levels it's true that the ENGL sounds pretty much like "itself at higher volumes". More so than the VH4, which to my mind changes its sound and feel a little bit when you play it at low volumes. But still it doesn't sound bad then - not at all - so that wouldn't be a reason for me not to buy it.

Hope I could help a little bit. Any questions - let me know (but it might take a while, I'm not online so often). BTW, I know this was more about other ENGL amps, but I figured this might still be interesting.

Cheers and good luck

I played the E 670 Special Edition - 4 channel monster. It did not have any warmth at all. Very metal sounding and I tweaked the damn thing for hours.
Believe it or not I use the Herbert for Blues and Funk Rock. I used to be in a hard rock band and it was perfect for that as well.
The juice I get out of the Herbert is hard to get out of other amps I've tried except maybe for the VHT SigX which I own and which is almost as juicy in both in 100W and 40W tube rectifier mode! Real dynamic and responsive amps = very versatile.

I own herbert, and just checked out the engl special edition, nice options....but way to compressed sounding for me,all the ch had that compressed tone and when I got home I plugged in my herbert to see,cuz at 1st I was swayed, then once I heard herb again it was all over,Herbert opens up and breaths, engl seams congested.
