ENGL vs DIEZEL

Just thought I would log on since I just left my studio and needed a break. I have been playing my new Engl SE 670 head that I received from Musicians friend this morning. I already own a Herbert and Einstein and this head fits in with the boys just fine. Pure metal and yes very compressed but it is what I wanted. All I really wanted to say is that the Germans fucking rule the tube amplifier world!!!! That also includes Reinhold bogner and James Heidrich of Bad Cat amplifiers.

Hi I tested a Herbert, a Invader an Engl SE and an Engl Powerball all in the same Room and with the same Cabinet and the same Guitar.

In my oppinion Herbert was best, Invader second, Powerball third and Special Edition fourth.
You have some nice, well known sounds in the Invader. I would say for soloing, the Invader has better sounds, because they are very compressed and sound even. Herbert ist tougher to play - you hear every nuance, but also every little mistake. That's good for me - i like it :)
For rhythm, Herbert beats all the Engl sounds. No Engl can produce this power or this dynamics.
So i bought a Herbert for its open dynamics, power and clear sounding high-gain sounds. (I play mainly rhythm)

Invader: Full Mids, cutting through soloing sounds, relatively "warm sounding" high gain sounds, able to dial "classical" sounds, high gain sounds are comressed, fast responding amp, every channel has it's own character, big loss of sound on lower volume level, only metal amp.

Herbert: Full base and presence, more scooped sounds, relatively "cold and modern" sounding high gain sounds, able to dial "new" sounds, high gain sounds are open, faster responding amp, whole amp has a character, sounds still good on lower volume level, more versatile amp.

I hope this helps.

Hey Peter,

I guess it's not a matter of MOD it... but just to "understand" it, and know it to get the correct voices and sounds...

Herbert dont need any mod :D, it's simply perfect... (well, 95% perfect for me... it would be 100% perfect if the "+/-" mode could be midi switchable !!! The rest is awesome !!!

I WOULD KILL FOR GETTING THE HERBERT with the +/- mode midi swithcable... (not with the mod and an extra pedalboard but with the same midi one... :()

P.S. I played the ENGL SE EL34 in Germany when I bought the Herbert and, although is a good amp, I really prefer the voices of the Hebert... by FAR !!!!

It seems we should mod Your Herbert a bit to get it
on higher place in the row

:D :D :D

The Diezel Herbert and Engl SE 670 both sound really good at bedroom volumes on the lead channels. Low volume cleans on the Herbert are definitely better than the Engl (cleans in general are better on the Herbert).
I found that the Diezel VH4 (at least the VH4S that I used to own) was not a good bedroom amp- it needed to get a lot more volume to really sound good.

If good sounding bedroom volume in a high wattage amp is important to you, you also really need to check out the Elmwood Modena heads. They are amazing in that regard.
