pummeling thick distortion for days..not for the subtle player...

So not for your jazz/funk players

I've got a local'ish dealer to bring the Viper and M-II in a few days time... will feed back how I get on when I take the Einstein along.

I tend to primarily play country and folk on my ESP/Diezel rigs :student:

Hm, you all got me thinking, maybe I'll try the EMG81 in the bridge of my M-II with the Herbert before swapping them for passives.... :dunno:

And believe it or not, some old school, lower output pups that make the Herbert or VH4 really work to juice the tone sound better than any high output pup, passive or active. Go figure. Take an oldschool 8 or 9k wound pup and find that it actually sounds better louder than a 12 or 14k wound pup. And a 6 or 7k may sound even better than that!!

No lies. Try it out. But most importantly, and this may sound harsh but it's a reality for all of us here on RT at some time or another. STOP screwing around on the computer, STOP thinking about varied combinations of gear and pups and cables and speakers and strings and picks and tubes and everything else and JUST PLAY!!!!!

Chasing tone is an obsession for many.... chasing the right guitar, pup, amp, etc.... can be detrimental. One thing I have personally done, is to ditch/sell most of my kit and go right back to essentials and investing time in playing. In doing this I ended up with a Diezel and I couldn't be happier.

I started this thread as I had by chance the opportunity to play an ESP M-II and was seriously impressed with the 'feel', tone and finish of this guitar. So much so that I am seriously considering changing my regular guitar for an ESP. You know when something feels just right, then it is right - thats how I felt about the M-II.

As mentioned I'm due to play the Viper and M-II through the Einstein shortly. Now back to practicing :)

Fortunately screwing around on the computer is what I get paid for so I have to do it anyway but I get your point. After all I was very happy with my M-II and the EMG85 in the bridge. Hadn't I bought the EC-400 I wouldn't have even thought about changing pickups but after directly comparing them again at last band practice I still have to say that the EC-400 with the SH-5 sounds a lot better through the Herbert than the M-II. I think your description fits pretty good, the SH-5 maybe in combination with the heady bodied EC just makes the amp work. As I met with a local guy who wanted to try out the Herbert on the weekend I had the chance of playing an Ibanez with an EMG81 and I have to say for rhythm stuff this might be the worst pickup (probably in combination with the guitar) I have played through the Herbert. Still I will try the Schecter with the SH-4 before switching to passives on the ESP....

I changed the EMG 60 and 81 in my Eclipse for a set of Motor City Detroiters...waaaaay more character and warmth then the EMG`s. Even though the bridge "only" reads about 9,1k they push the front-end of my Einstein as much as the EMG`s and the pick-harmonics just jump out of them...I don`t think I will ever go back to actives
