ever wanted a SLO100 preamp in one rack space?

Two things that popped out at me were, wow , there is very little in there, how can that account for all of the SLO preamp? I suppose it might make sense but I don't know enough about the circuit layout. Still seems scarse to me though.

There isn't a lot inside the SLO either.

Obviously it's gonna sound different into a different power section. (does any amp ever sound the same if you swap out the power section?) But at $530 it's probably a decent little kit.

If you isolate the components for just the preamp on the venerable Marshall ST-1 circuit board found in 2203's etc it accounts for less than 20 parts.

The soldano crunch uses 1 less gain stage and has a few different components as to be voiced slightly diff from the lead channel. So let's say thats double the parts for the 2 preamp voicings
Then add in the parts for the extra gainstage(s) as well as assume that the Soldano uses a few more parts in general even for just 1 of the preamp voicings compared to the Marshalls.

20x2 =40 + 10 added parts =50 parts Hypothetically speaking

Now count the components on that preamp gut shot - Looks to be approx 50 parts

Yeah, seems about right. The SLO doesn't exactly have a lot going on inside it, either. Here's the clone I built. You can see that if you remove the power section, the power tubes, the transformers, the preamp tube for the loop, phase inverter, depth/presence pots, the output section on the preamp board, etc... you aren't left with a whole lot ;)

That's really clean work dude :rock: Where'd you grab the kit from?

Thanks, most of the parts came from C3. Others I sourced from Mouser or AES or one of the other electronics supply places.

Looks like a few things are missing? :confused:

Like what? It's a PREAMP. There are supposed to be things missing. You know... like half the amp. Don't need two of the preamp tubes. Don't need about half of the preamp board. Don't need the presence pot. What are you left with? You're left with three tubes, 7 pots, and some caps/resistors. Done.
