Everybody wants to be the lead guitarist?

I do both, I try to be well rounded. I don’t play in a band, just no time with my work to commit to it. But when I play it’s about 50/50 rhythm and lead. I don’t really think about it, I just enjoy both.

I was the rhythm player in the only band I was ever in like a million years ago. I like riffs more than solos, but solos are fun, too.

I can really rip some Glengary leads.

So you're neither type of a guitarist or one of them? :)
I am leaning towards good rthythm stuff. Hetfield style, Chuck Schuldiner too, although he is of both camps.

I respect solo work, and eventually go for it, but in no way I would ever want to be a strictly solo guitarist.

The stereotypical guitarist what people think about is someone who wants to be the lead guitarist in the band. How many of you fall into that category? Are you more into playing leads and solos, or are you more of a rhythm guitar type musician?
I'm definitely more of a rhythm guitarist. I can't shred and even if I do play a "solo" it's super basic. I just didn't put in the time to get that speed and dexterity. I'm more than happy to hand off that role to someone else if they want it.

I’ve done both, though considering playing bass and NOT telling the band I can play guitar 🫣
That's how I ended up being the singer AND guitarist. "Oh, you write songs!". I got in a band with my buddies thinking it would be a 1/3 split with things since there are three of us. Reality I have written all of the songs, including lyrics and riffs and structure, came up with the logo, contact about shows, and sing and play, lol. I guess whatever works, works. I enjoy it and my buddies get busy, etc.
