Fatter JB soundalikes?

Any pickup can sound great in one guitar and terrible in another. Just have to find the one that matches up to whatever you have.
Duncan and Dimarzio both have exchange policies.
Yeah i don't like the JB in a RR Jackson V I found out.

Yeah it’s weird how it works. I had a Rg570 and tried different pickups in it…ended up with a Tonezone in it. The basswood body needed the extra bass to balance out the sound of the basswood. Years later a friend had me put one in his LP. It sounded terrible to me, but he liked it.

Seymour Duncan RTM , which was designed after an old JB Warrren D used back in the day or rough cast A5 magnet swap in the standard JB . I think one of those will get you closest to what you’re looking for . I prefer the rough cast A5 magnet swap , tames the highs a bit

Not to mention, if you call Seymour Duncan custom shop and explain to them what you’re looking for exactly, they’ll build it however you want it

I have quite a few JBJ’s from the 80’s, wound by MJ…
I also have a rough cast JB Antiquity MJ wound me at Custom Shop.
All Great pickups.

My friend, (who I trust his ears), swears by the Jim Wagner Murkat as the best ‘improved JB’ pickup.

I gotta order one to try,
I’ve held off as I have so many pickups sitting all over the house, in drawers etc…
😑

I thought the Schecter Pasadena plus was sorta JB-ish but bigger and more articulate. More bite-y too

I swapped out a Suhr Aldrich for a JB in my Kiesel DC6, ash body, maple neck and liked it better. Definitely felt like the JB had more output, more aggressive sound. Have you thought about the Duncan distortion or Dimarzio super distortion? Those might be what you are looking for.

The AFWAYU comes to mind & the Thrash factor which is a tighter JB from what i understand.

I've looked into the RTM, but A2 would seem to suggest it'd be less hot than the JB. Is it not?

That's the thing though, tighter is kinda the opposite of fatter, isn't it? At least when talking about pickups. I kinda want a smoother mellower JB for the Les Paul.

I’ve had the RTM and JB in the same guitar , ash strat style with rosewood neck . The RTM is smoother but I wouldn’t say it’s less hot , didn’t sound that way to my ears

Yeah I have a 2nd Degree Black Belt and Tonenerd Whiskey. My plan was to put them in Les Pauls I have but these damn guitars have computer parts instead of classic soldering.

I might put one of them in my Walnut Gibson "The Paul" but is a dark guitar tone wise so have to use caution.

As per Jim Wagner himself the Murkat is the same pickup as his Fillmore model, it’s just f-spaced and has 2 rows of screw peices that are adjustable. I had both a Murkat and Fillmore at the same time and they seemed the same to me. They’re nice pickups for something recent made and I can see how others see them as an improved JB, but they’re far from my all time favorite pickups
