I've always gravitated towards v-30's, whether in a Mesa cab, or the two Engls I have now; but I think I'm tired of them now especially for the detuned stuff I'm doing right now. I wish I still had my old mode four cab with k100's in it to reference. I remember it being tighter, but it's been years since I've been in a metal project.
Anyone have a favorite speaker that's tight for metal, but not grating?? Anyone have the same experience with v-30's for modern metal?

I'm using a Vht d120, engl v-30 cab, jackson dinky with Duncan nazgul, tuned to drop Bb. I didn't have another guitar with me to compare if the pickup was the culprit, but I did play it with and without the boost and dint feel as it was any better or worse with it. Just had this slight fuzzy tearing looseness that was difficult to dial out.

Sounds like you desire higher wattage speakers. Most guys do go k100, and they fit your desires but there are other high wattage choices. Id say start at 100 watts but I used 400 watt delta 12a for a ling time with great results. Unbreakable, dark and huge tight bottom.

Interesting. A PA speaker? So I'm guessing it had a pretty flat freq response? I know some of the eminence guitar speaks have a pretty high rating as well.

I really like the eminence texas heats. They are cheap and sound good. Dimebag sigs I believe

I am kind of in the same boat and ready to try something different.

Apart from just random cabs and speakers when I was younger I have tried V30's, V30 x 75, P50E and Eminence V12 Legends.

I do really like the Legends but they have a lot of presence IMO. Like they would almost be better for a hardcore band than a metal band.

I have a semi dark amp and the V30's while do sound crushing have that odd frequency fizz and can be a bit dark I guess.

I have really wanted to try a lot of speakers. Some notable desires are Scumback, Fane and Creamback 75's.

Anyway out of the very few I have tried, my best results were Chinese V30 x WGS 75's. That was also with a VHT Pitbull so I may just get a pair of 75's to X with my V30 before I move to uncharted territories but I am curious to see what others think.

I have seen several people recommend the k100's over the years.

A lot of variables contribute to a speakers applicability to a genre or style of music being attained. Amp, guitar, playing style, cab, woods, room, mics, etc.

All that said? G12K100 are a fantastic starting point - they're powerful, crisp, and punishing. Outside of this?? Believe it or not, P50E speakers (Fryette) once broken in, kick all kinds of serious drop-tuned style thunderous ass - in the right cab powered by the right amp!!

It's a journey. Or?? Just keep what ya got, and make it work. I've grown immensely reliant on my 10 band EQs in my loops as of late. They've made a world of difference without changing a thing internally - tubes, speakers, etc. Maybe give that a shot first as a 10BEQ costs about the same as 1.5 new speakers ;)

I am a huge K100 fan for really heavy stuff. Find an old MF400 Marshall cab and you get a quad of them generally for under $300! I like the Creamback 65's too. The P50E's I like with Fryette stuff and usually int he Deliverance cab in particular. Only time I heard them in a non-Fryette/VHT cab was in a Marshall of some sort and did;t like them as well.

So I have never really looked into this before that deeply so I am glad you made this thread. Anyway I found this video and the results literally made me laugh out loud.

This particular video is very interesting. Decide for yourself.

I know youtube videos are not everything but I liked the K-100 much better. Although the combo wasn't bad either I prefer K100 solo.

Edit: Here is another cool video. Makes me see most speakers will have some kind of "fizz" I guess it comes down to which to you hate the most, or which is least noticeable?

I like the K100's in the clip as well but also the Creamback 75's sound great and the Jensen sound killer.

Edit 2 :D OK I will stop with the videos but I had to post this. Another thing I have never looked into. Listen to how much of a difference there is between 8 ohm V30 and 16 ohm V30. Unbelievable.

ive been wanting to put 4 different speakers in a 4x12 for recording purposes for a while, might be time to do that

Oddly enough I usually HATE V30's but dug the combo with the off center mic for the V30 and center for the K100. I will have to try this with my Torpedo Studio.

I have k100s, v30s, p50s and g12/75s in a bunch of different cabs. Love them all. But I am much more easy to please than a lot of you guys.I

If I had to pick a favorite,I'd say the k100s. But I remember the blue label 200 watt EV speakers kicking all sorts of ass.

I have and have tried some oddball combinations starting with Celestion V-types in X pattern with WGS HM-75's..V-types with Mojotone BV-30v's in x pattern..these combinations work for me,the V-types don't have that mid range spike of the V30's but sound great to me,and are rated at 70 watts..IMO they are fairly neutral speakers that I believe are under-rated..these combos of speakers handle a good amount of volume and have a good bottom end with a good grind to them, that is once the V-types are broken in.

Not to open a can of worms but ime the 8 ohm V30s in Mesa cabs sound different than the 16 ohm V30s I've had. I bought a used Mode Four cab from GC with the stock 16ohm V30s in it and placed it right next to my Mesa Traditional with stock 8ohm V30s and the difference was not subtle. The MF cab went back the next day.

I would also say V30's and K100's are great. I have a Bogner UberKab with V30's and T75's in an X config that sounds amazing. Then a Front Loaded Diezel with K100's that's different but equally amazing. Can't go wrong with either of them for metal I do believe. I think if you're tired of V30's, then it's worth giving K100's a try.

One note, I did find the K100's really trebly until they were broke in a little bit.

V12 Legends fit that description. Add G12T75s and even CL80s handle intense levels of volume, speed and gain well.

The Mesa V30 is an older version. It's still made in the UK for Mesa.

The Mode Four V30 is a Chinese version made to Marshall's specifications.

Both are different than the current Chinese V30.

Look up the T numbers and you'll see there are many versions of a V30.

I like evm black label for metal. It's just tight and brutal

I used the T75 for years...all through the 90's and in the early 2000's switched to the V30's...also used an Ampeg V140C combo that had the K100s in it...(actually K85's that they re-labled K100 as they were rated for 100 watts).

I really grew tired of the "Celestion" sound...once I tried Eminence I redid all my cabs..I've got 2x12 w 8ohm Legends..a 4x12 front load with 8 ohm Legends..a 4x12 w Texas Heat and Manowars x pattern..and just picked up a Peavey 430A w the Stephens Tru sonics...I did a bit of a shootout and posted it..

I really like the Legends...they have some nice presence as someone else noted but not fizzy and are 120 watters that go deep and will keep your low end in check. The Texas Heats are 150 watts and are a bit darker but have a nice low mid punch and also sound great on the cleans. The Manowar is a 120 watter and is like the T75 but with more mid presence and a tamed high end..the Stephens Tru sonics are similar to the Greenbacks and kinda come across as a Greenback-V30 cross...they are only 25 watters though.

I have really dug all the H75 Creamback vids..may try that in my 6505+ combo...

Sounds like your main issue may just be solved by stepping up to the higher wattage speakers..K100s...maybe even check out the new Redback Sidewinders..
