Favorite speakers for metal??

I played a 2x12 loaded with K100's for 4 years and loved it for all things metal. Every amp I've put through it rocked. It also sounded good for classic rock but since were talking the heavy stuff here I'll stick to the topic.

That said I picked up an EVH cab loaded with four EVH 25 watt speakers, which are literally 25 watt Heritage Greenbacks, and I have to say I haven't played on my K100 loaded cab since; that cab has been collecting dust. The Heritage Greenbacks are wicked wicked tight, aggressive in the mids and not the least bit harsh and these aren't even broke in yet.

I currently play multiple amps through the Heritage Greenbacks (Savage 120, VHT D60, KSR ARES) and every amps just sounds phenomenally brutal, tight, articulate and warm. No ice pick highs, nor harsh mids.

I still like my K100s, but I REALLY like the EVH 25 watters.

I need to try running both cabs

I like Chinese g12m’s the best. But I do also like Governors/Man o War combos for loud stuff.

Ever worry about blowing them with 120w amp?

There is no return from V30's.. you must go back to them.. Satan commands it

Oh, how I wish that weren't true... :bash:

They are nowhere near my favorite speaker, but I've still got 3 4x12 cabs loaded with them. Some amps love them, some hate them, but mostly, that mid spike is just too much for my ears.

The CL80 someone suggested above might be worth consideration. It's bright, but without too much of that annoying V30 spike. The Mesa version Black Shadow 90, is basically the same speaker, just not quite as bright. Big magnet should makes it pretty tight, too without getting too thin.

Lots of suggestions for the K85/K100 - same speaker, they just retested it and determined 85w was too low, that it could handle 100w without modification. Tight lows and sweet but smooth highs. I've used these exclusively in my main gigging rig since '93 and they still get a lot of play time. They are a little harsh until they're broken in, as someone stated above.

What about something like an EV EVM12L. Huge magnet (tight bass), huge power handling, no mid spike, but still cutting, too. They're not cheap, but there are "clones" available from Eminence and Weber, and the later revision is still being sold by EV. They might not work with everything, but they sound phenomenal with my Boogie Mk. II and Mk. IV.

A lot of variables contribute to a speakers applicability to a genre or style of music being attained. Amp, guitar, playing style, cab, woods, room, mics, etc.

All that said? G12K100 are a fantastic starting point - they're powerful, crisp, and punishing. Outside of this?? Believe it or not, P50E speakers (Fryette) once broken in, kick all kinds of serious drop-tuned style thunderous ass - in the right cab powered by the right amp!!

It's a journey. Or?? Just keep what ya got, and make it work. I've grown immensely reliant on my 10 band EQs in my loops as of late. They've made a world of difference without changing a thing internally - tubes, speakers, etc. Maybe give that a shot first as a 10BEQ costs about the same as 1.5 new speakers ;)

The p50e's have been my goto for a long time now. I love them. They have a big but crazy tight and focused low end, strong mids, and a clear but not annoying high end. Sounds amazing for downtuned stuff, but also really great for the more traditional metal grind. I do want to throw in, the Framus Cobra cab is loaded with standard greenbacks and that head and cab together were thee angriest combo I've ever heard. Just a wild mid growl that surprised the hell out of me the first time I heard it and then found out it was loaded with greenbacks. Insane!
Still, there's something pretty great about a well broken in set of V30's in a traditional sized cab, closemic'd with an sm57 - evenyone knows how to mic it and how to make it sound good. Easy and fast. And bulletproof, and cheap, and easily replaceable if it gets nicked. It's not perfect but there are a lot of pluses with the v30, and if you like the way your gear sounds through them you'll be right at home at just about any backline you may find yourself plugging into.

I'm about to try a Redback 150 G12H-150 to replace my K100.

Not to open a can of worms but ime the 8 ohm V30s in Mesa cabs sound different than the 16 ohm V30s I've had. I bought a used Mode Four cab from GC with the stock 16ohm V30s in it and placed it right next to my Mesa Traditional with stock 8ohm V30s and the difference was not subtle. The MF cab went back the next day.

BOTH of those speakers are V30 Variants, neither is similar to a stock v30. Avatar sells the MF V30 as “hellatones”.

Thanks for all the info guys. I hate going down this rabbit hole again, and have had the k100's and the Texas heats in the past, but never used them when playing modern metal. My old v-30 cabs worked best with my marshalls and what I've been playing the last few years.
Anyone want to trade for a few v-30's?

Pretty much been using Legend V12s for years, and play metal exclusively. I don't know that I could even use another speaker at this point.

Are those the speakers in the Lynchbox Cab?

ive been wanting to put 4 different speakers in a 4x12 for recording purposes for a while, might be time to do that
Worthy Post!!!!!!!!!!!!

Excellent idea for those wanting to record with close mic setups. Cheaper than 1x12s, works fine, get a baffle and separate the mics from any bleed (not that there's much when you're within 1" of the sonic epicentre) and off ya go.

I've done this for years. My main cab currently has a Greenback, Creamback 75, Fane F70 and a G12H30.

Creamback 75’s are great mixed w//v30’s.
Went to all V30’s but kinda miss them

This +1.

I just got a new cab with 2 V30s + 2 H75s in an X pattern... and it kills. The H75s work great for metal. Tight, articulate and no flub.

Personal input only here: cl80 for classic metal, k100 for modern

Might need to try this. K100 seem appealing though too.
