Sorry but I have to chime in on this post regarding the Fender Atomic PU. I purchase one of the original Fender Highway 1 Stratocasters which was sent to my local dealer from the NAMM show the year it was first released. Since then I have seen several of these in other stores and none of them are like mine (Large paddle headstock etc.).
Now just out of curiosity, I did a search on Fender Atomic pickups and very few are what I have and purchased for my Strat. I'll explain. . . . Most of my axes are single pickup with a single volume knob, I play with my hands on the strings, not switches or knobs. The Highyway1 came with a Black Atomic and 2 single coils. The first week I owned it I converted to a single PU single volume knob. Since everything was white, I decided to purchase a white Fender Atomic. This is where it got tricky (at that time). There were 2 versions available, the Atomic and the Atomic II.
So during this whole time I was strapping every PU I had laying around to see what would work in the Strat. I tried Duncan's (JB, Full Shred) EMG (81-85) and nothing I heard could hold a candle to the Atomic. I passed on the Atomic II, it was muddy and lacked the punch of the original Atomic.
Looking at what is being CALLED a Fender Atomic ARE NOT Atomic PU's. Fender Atomics come in 2 colors - Black\White - They have Fender Logo and the Word Atomic stamped into the base plate. Those are the only ones I know that sound the way mine do. They were expensive ($90 Each) but they are hand wound and very VERY good sounding. This is the best passive PU I have ever found that even comes close to the Active EMG's I use in all my other axes.
