How are Deluxe Reverbs for rock? I'm assuming they work well with pedals. Have any of you gotten GREAT rock tones with a Deluxe and an OD pedal?

Thats basically what I gig with now. I use a pedal board into a deluxe reverb on an amp stand. I am very happy with the sound I get. Its light, loud and punchy, sounds good, I can rotate pedals if I want a different sound. I still have a 4x12 and amp head I could use if I wanted I just don't bother anymore.

Some of the best live tone I have ever gotten was a Visual Sound Jeckyll & Hyde into a Deluxe Reverb.

I was watching a MTV special from 1986, Van Halen Unleashed, and EVH was getting some killer tone from his backstage practice amp (which I'm 99% sure was a Deluxe Reverb).

Fantastic amp. A couple good overdrive pedals, a delay and you're set.
I used one and still do quite a bit.
I also use one with a Twin once in a while and the tone is massive.

Sweet rig. How does the Deluxe Reverb compare to the Vibrolux Reverb???

Do you set that case behind the amps to sort of "seal" the open back cabs, or is it just a convenient place to put it?

A deluxe reverb will do rock very well provided you ever clip the bright cap on the vibrato channel, use the normal channel or crank it up so the bright cap isn't affecting it much. The bright cap really doesn't work well with many overview pedals, IMO.

Also the speaker makes a huge different, just don't like Jensen style speakers for hard rock. Try a WGS et65, vintage 30, or high power greenback.

I had a Vibrolux. Nice amp but I prefer 12's.
It was noisy as well. No negative feedback loop.
Had to get rid of it.

For that matter, how's the Twin??

I definitely prefer a Twin Reverb. It's a BIG, bold sound. It's a standard for a reason.
I use one all the time and it always sounds fantastic, not matter what you throw at it.
BB Preamp, Zendrive, Fulldrives, Bogner, Analogman, etc.....
It is very heavy though!

It was an attempt to keep the sound from projecting out of the back of the amps. Trying to keep the volume down.

GC for a while had a head version of the DR and it rocked cranked up with a humbucker. Very 4 hole like.

There are some pretty common mods for the Vibrolux that adds a negative feedback loop, and reduces the noisyness, and makes the amp fuller and fatter sounding.

But, I think you might have a good point, it's a 2x12, and it'd be much easier to take a Deluxe Reverb and drop in a Greenback, V30, or G12H30.

Friend of mine rocks one(dual). His distorted tone lacks some bite, but that's splitting hairs. His clean is amazing. I forget what pedals he uses for gain....like others he got sick of lugging his 4x12 around. I like his tone... Better than a lot I've heard out live around here.

Bogner Red into a Deluxe is sweet.

Yes it does!

I'm pretty convinced those pedals were specifically designed for blackface Fenders.

Tried it into my friend's Deville 410 and that rawked too.

I've been gigging a 68 Custom Deluxe Reverb for a few months now and I love it, great tone, great weight, great portability.

I'm playing in a funk/soul/rock/blues cover band and it covers all bases.
I run it at about 5-6 on the volume and it's just starting to break up, lovely warm cleans backing off the guitar volume, nice and fat and warm when you roll it back on.
Been using an XTS Precision Overdrive for higher gain songs and a Koko Boost for solos, sounds awesome !!!

those bogner pedals are insane through a deluxe reverb...saw a surprise performance by craig campbell during the CMA's last year in nashville. his guitarist and friend of mine stephen was running a bogner blue pedal through a deluxe and it absolutely freaking killed, couldn't believe how awesome his tone was. and this was just at a honkytonk off broadway for a surprise appearance: no amazing PA or anything....great setup
