Who's owned one (I think hal9000 has...)? What do you think of the guitar? How's the quality? Will it make me a better player? Will it hide my sloppiness and mistakes? Does it do windows?

One of my friends had one for a while. I'd put it on par with a ESP LTD EC-1000. It does hide mistakes - everyone is too busy looking at the guitar trying to figure out what it is to listen to what you're playing! :D

I'm not familiar with the ESP. Is that a good thing or bad thing?

It only runs Mac OSX, they discontinued the Linux models a year after the first production

It is a thing - good or bad depends on what you want, good or bad. They are good guitars, just don't have the weight that I feel like they should, being all Les Paul shaped... The higher end ESP's get pretty positive reviews, and rightfully so. The Fernandes is right up there, just made in China instead of Korea.

Man... I have to say those things are not, shall we say, "asthetically pleasing"... :(

Ahh, but is it "asthetically challenged" enough that you'd kick it off the rack? I kinda like them as a backup/schtick guitar. At least more than I like V's or most Deans.

Thanks for the info mysticaxe.

I actually like the shape, at least a lot better than most non-traditionally shaped guitars.

If you are looking for a non-traditional shaped guitar, then it would fit the bill. If you are looking for something that is going to be an alternative to a Lester-type of guitar, I would look elsewhere.

Where would you look? I *may* be able to get a Ravelle Deluxe for under $300 locally. It's not mint, but for cheap enough, I'm not worried about that. Part of the appeal of this guitar is based upon a "bang for buck" assumption.

I really don't need another guitar, I'm just looking to spend a little money I don't have. :D

they look like what you would get if you crossed an ibanez iceman with a slinky

For $300 its a great guitar. At the end of the day, it won't unseat your Vigier. It will be a little different, but won't beat up a top dog. My "look elsewhere" had to do with the Lester type of sound - the Fernandes is a thinner sounding guitar. It's closer to a S-series Ibanez bassy superstrat sound without the chunk of a Les Paul.

For example -
My stable includes a RG470 that I just picked up on the cheap. The RG is a cool guitar, but I already have other guitars that do everything it does better. I'm planning on using it as a cheap stage guitar/backup. The Fernandes is in a similar boat (in my mind), only with a fixed bridge.

Yeah, I'm not looking for something to unseat the Vigier, as that would need to be a super strat'ish type of guitar, but if the Ravelle isn't a decent substitution for the chunk/roundness of an LP, it's off my radar. I probably won't like anything that's an LP substitution, but I want to try anyway and I kind of like the body style of the Ravelle. But, oh well... I don't want an S-Series type tone because for the most part, I've only heard negative comments about those guitars.

Thanks for the input.

I suppose you could pick it up on the cheap and spend more money you don't have on getting fatter pickups for it! I think it has a JB in the bridge stock...

The friend of mine that had it also has two Studios, an Epi Ace Frehley, a BC Rich NJ Bich, an old ESP Eclipse (bolt-on/floyd) and goes for a Les Paul sound. The NJ Bich got closer than the Ravelle did. Granted, the Epi Ace doesn't do the lester chunk thing as much (but more so than the Fernandes), but I'm guessing that's because of the Super Distortions.

i like the shape...

i've only tried one, and the battery was dead in the sustainer or some such lark, so i didn't really get to try it (i was checking out an amp rather than the guitar)...

frankly, i wouldn't buy one. the battery might run out.  EDIT: and then you won't be able to run windows on it.

BLASPHEMY! That guitar is exactly like the one Ed played on the 1980 World Invasion Tour right down to that Danelectro neck!!!

Steve

That's not too long before I stopped hanging off Ed's sack. :D
