Was never about his tone. Just pure genius playing. Just sayin'....

I don't care what anyone says some of the tones on Diary of a madman are Godlike

Yeah, it sounds alot like his tone. What guitar are you using?

This. Not as much on Blizzard, but I like the Diary tone a lot.

I think everything on Diary except SATO was tuned a half step down giving it a bigger fatter sound, Randys tone worked great for him

Thanks - I've added a new clip which is the full Crazy Train tune with Randy on the left and me on the right.

Fully stock Gibson CS '61 Reissue LP/SG Custom (57 Classics pickups)

My favorite guitar tone of all time is Randy's tone on the Live Tribute album. What a tone. That reverb

His playing on that album is just incredible.

I read years back that he didn't like his tone on the blizzard album.

Wow, we're definitely on different pages ;). I hate that tone on that album. I much prefer his tone on the live stuff that comes with the DOAM reissue.

That live disc from the DOAM 2011 reissue is some of my favorite stuff by Randy , he was throwing out some different licks than all the other BOO `81 era live recordings and Ozzys vocals sound real. Tribute is great but it almost sounds too perfect for a live recording but a lot of that has to do with Ozzy overdubbed vocals

The Tribute album tone was reamped and processed my Max Norman though. If you want what really came out of Randy's speakers you need to download the Cleveland bootleg.

Maybe, but it is still my favorite guitar tone ever. I wore out two copies of that album, listened to it so many times when it came out i was driving my parents nuts.

I'll check out that recording.

And, to me, Tribute lacks a good drum and bass mix.

yeah agree but the Max Norman probably wanted Randy to dominate the album mix so its not surprising really

Yeah I love the Tribute Album for what it is.. but it is edited and his best lead parts are pasted in and out and together. Doesn't bug me one bit though, they captured the essence and brilliance of his live performances and jammed it into one album. Agreed though that night to night a more accurate description of his playing is that he would change things up and some leads were way more on than others given the night. They were still fantastic but just not as good as say the notes he chose the night before. The Cleveland bootleg is still slammin though. What a fucking great live player. that huge cutting tone with the verb and delay on the leads. So aggressive too. He put mumbling drunk Ozzy on the map.

His tone on the KBFH Montreal 1981 recording kicks ass. Been listening to this since late 81 and always thought this represented his tone. His tone on the live bonus Diary disc also rocks. I have the original radio broadcast of the Cleveland/Tribute show and his tone is not as good as the Montreal show!!!
