Fish and M4

Seriously,

at the moment, I think the M4 legitimately sounds better.

I'm not really that surprised.

Neither am I :) I think the fish is a killer preamp though, but the tone of the M4 is definitely the best I've played to date :)

Interesting. Where would you place the RM4 in this ranking?

Gene, when did your Fish arrive?

Fish arrived on St. Patty's day, and sounded KILLER that day.

Now that I've done some A/B'ing, the M4 just sounds smoother, fuller, and better in/on/to my ears.

Only a few preamps really blow me away these days.

M4
IE4
GT Trio (criminally underrated and under-priced)

Never even heard of the GT Trio. That surprises me as I have tried nearly every other preamp :). Might have to pick one of those up. Whatcha like about it Gene???

Most magical Fendery cleans I've ever heard from any amp.
COD-like lead tones, reminds me of Shawn Lane.
Beautiful, elegant design/layout.
Great value. (I picked up a mint, brown face with the footswitch for less than $600, I think.)
Midi upgradeable.

Can you compare the Fish channels with a corresponding Egnater module? For example, "The Brown channel is most like the SL2, but I like this about SL2 more...".

Country - Distinctive clean - similar to a brighter Bman A, I guess. Nothing bad to say about it really. The three way brightness switch is tuned REALLY well. I can get good tones out of all three.

Shark - sounds like somewhere between VX A and B. Not as clean as A, not as dirty as B. Cool sounds. Very mojoey and vintagey for a such a sophisticated/hifi setup. For me, it's not as useful as VX, and not as sparkley.

Strato - Like a bright SL2 A. Not very exciting. Too bright IMO. disappointing.

Brown - Like SL B with about 20% more gain. Definitely the best channel in the box. Still doesn't sound as pleasing as EG 3/4, SL2, SL, etc. :)

Strato and Brown share an EQ, which sucks since they aren't close at all brightness wise. I can't get them both to sound the way I want without dialing back the treble on strato. :aww:

Im not at all surprised. I was not at all blown away by a video I saw of the new Fish. But Im probably also biased. though I do LOVE almost every XTC clip still...

It's funny every other preamp doesn't even interest me anymore. I can my tones plenty well through the M4. If it ain't Eggie modular, I don't even care anymore :)

Cabs / speakers are still the portion in my rig that still eludes me yet. I'm definitely happy with my Eggie 4x12 though. They rock!

I wasn't blown away by the Fish video either. I thought it sounded really nice, but for all the hype and fu$$ made over it I was a little let down. I'll still take my M4 over anything out there. If only we had a Mark IV type module and maybe something in the vein of Engl for modern metal. That's really about all we're missing at this point. At least as far as my needs are concerned.

+1 and I would imagine with all the guys starting to mod,I really see it happening soon!!!

i think some bogners like the classic and duende and shiva are some of the best tone machines on the market.

but i played the original tol 100 right next to a xtc back in the mid 90s and the eggie crushed it, and then played the original IE 4 and later played the original fish which by then had already caused a stir, and i kept thinking to myself "what am i missing?"

the fish really didn't strike me as special in the least, but the IE 4 was amazing.

i was in the market for a preamp back then and could have purchased the fish but ended up with a triaxis because at the time it was cheaper than the IE 4 and had more modes i thought i needed,

but if i had to do it over i'd take the IE 4 in a heartbeat.

Thanks for the heads-up Gene
I really value your input on this - especially as you have a lot of gear to compare

Since getting my M4 I am really happy and would rather just have new modules to install rather than chasing after complete new preamps

I vote for a new Eggie module (or two)
Maybe a have a Piscies module - 2 channels=2 fish

In the meantime I want to buy the 4 modules that I don't already have, and a second M4 if I can link them together

The Pisces module? That's awesome!!!!

whenever I do a video of an amp, its just to show the features and give u an idea of what it sounds like. That is why I only use one mic and no post eq or other processing. Remember, u are listening to an amp demo through computer speakers. You are not in the room listening to the actual rig. Im sure I could add 3 mics and add all kinds of stuff to make it sound incredible, but that really wouldnt be fair to my clients.

I am blown away buy the Modules and am gonna add one to compliment my fish rig.

Point taken. Since you have both available to you, what is your take on the M4 versus Fish comparison?
