What set would be the closest to EMG 81's?

I really want to try a set but it seems all the artists using them have their own "signature set".....kinda seems shady
Nah, just a newer brand using name recognition to make some headway I think. WOULD be cool to hear all the sets in the same guitar going through the same rig to hear the differences back to back though.

I should probably check their site to see if they've done this.

I dunno I just saw a lot of long time EMG users jump ship and instanty get a "signature set" makes me wonder how much is financial reasoning?
not knocking the pickups at all though!
Ah ok, I gotcha.

I can say that I have tried the fluence moderns and the devin set and there's no comparison. The Devin set is far above in every way.

There definitely are some differences. I've noticed a more pronounced mids with the KSE set.

I have moderns in two guitars now. Absolutely love them. I was a die hard EMG 81/85 guy. Prefer the older ones because they are warmer. These moderns just kill all my EMGs. More clear, higher gain without being silly like a Blackout, more articulate, equal bottom end. My best EMG sounds muddy now to my ears. It's really frustrating!!! I have 17 or so guitars that I'm going to have to switch half or more over now to the Fishmans. DAMNIT!!!!!

Just got a 7 string set of moderns. Excited to try them out. Was never happy with any 7 string pickup I tried. Want to order the DT set next and the classics.

So if I HATE EMG's... would I like the Fluence Classics?

I hate EMGs as well. The Fluence are so much different. Not as "sterile" and easier to dial in.

Hate is such a strong word. :D

I haven't tried the Classics yet. That's next.

I like the EMG 81, but I find it to be too much. Are the Fishmans clearer? I also am looking for a tight bottom end with a passive mid and top end.

The Fishman's are clearer but you're not really going to get that mix. At least not that I've found. To me they have something EMGs didn't. I never got along with EMGs for one reason or another. These Fluence KSE pickups I'm comfortable with and am still experimenting a bit. Really gotta turn some knobs from my usual settings.

Ever find a good shootout?

I am planning to get a set for that guitar I ordered but idk which ones to get. Can't find a shootout with all models anywhere.

I keep saying I won't be influenced by my bros who are pimping these pickups.

My resistance may be fading....

My resistance is gone...For certain, I'm going to get a set just to at least try out vs. the EMG.

How are those Rotting Corpse Fishman signature pickups coming along? Those are the ones I really want ;)

One of the guys on the FB group said he owns all Fishman models and plans to upload a shootout this weekend.

i hated the DT set. Hated the modern set. Liked the Classic, KSE, and Tosin Abasi

What did you like or dislike about each set?

Maybe you've come across further info regarding Fishmans Fluence pickups? (5 years later...)??

I went on an upgrade spree with my BC rich, looking to reduce hum from a nasty apartment wiring system.

I heard things about the Moderns that included people not liking the single coil sound - maybe Fishman is doing things better now with their most recent series. I couldn't tell if the Townshend, or for that matter, the Abasi, were as quiet or to my liking. The Abasi seems to only include a bridge single coil sound MIXED with the neck single coil sound - I preferred to have both (which I may have been able to wire, but in that case which may have resulted in less hum reduction than I was hoping for - that hum reduction being one of my main goals, without losing the versatile sound I have now.

Unfortunately I don't think the Fishman website or videos are that much upgraded - I may have purchased the Townshend if I had a better grasp of weather its "chaotic" bridge voicing somehow affected both, and whether it was as versatile as what I have now (which is a Fred humbucker so it may have been similar, but sometimes I was tired of the Fred not fitting the varied available presets others have created, and needing to meticulously dial in every sound specifically for them, on my Fractal Axe FX II.

I'm pretty sure the Modern isn't versatile enough to do good at both heavy metal & classic rock. But I'd love to try the Townshend on some otehr guitar - my main guitar has a 24 5/8 scale which I'm very used to and allows stretches that are uncomfortable on other guitars. I'd hate to lose versatility on it.

Being that I felt safer with their classic sound, I opted for the McRocklin artist series set, since it seemed like pretty much an Open Core Classic set but with a few tweaks in the single coils that I felt I might like. Also it was a recent set, and some have complained about still getting hum on some of the previous set's single coil settings.

I'd love to hear something from your updated knowledge.

I like the KSE's the best out of all the Fluences based on the Moderns.

I do like the Moderns as well, but I like how the shift of the low end is better on the KSE's. Lower than the stuffy low mids of the the Moderns, so that translate into both more chunk, clarity, and tightness.

Just got a set of the Townsends, they're going in my Stormbender, once I get em wired up and played on, I'll post up my thoughts.

I dig the Devin set, but it’s the only Fishman’s I’ve used so I can’t compare them to others. Playing a random guitar with Moderns in a store doesn’t really give enough knowledge for comparisons.

I dig the switching options, Active/Passive/Passive + Split Coil (which works for the pickups individually, it’s not combining the bridge and neck) and when I was using the guitar they’re in would often record one take in the Active setting and one in the Passive setting because it was enough of a difference to make it worth it. The Passive+Split Coil is better than most split coil pickups I’ve played, but still doesn’t sound like a legit single coil.

I haven’t actually taken the time to compare these to the 81/85 combo I have in another guitar, I should sometime as I’m curious how different they are.

My favorite Fishmans are the Classics, but TBH, I've found something at least usable in every set I've tried.

Honestly, my least favorite have probably been the Adlers. They sound amazing, but the stupid finish makes it hard for them not to look completely out of place in 99% of all guitars, LOL.

There's a few voicings I've not been sold on, TBH. Like Voice 2 on the neck of the Classics. Like... what is it supposed to be? But the bridge pickup on the Classics is to die for. Voice 1 is like a bright open PAF-type that's not puny in output like an actual (modern) PAF-type. Then Voice 2 that's like a JB, just better.
